Job summary

Intermountain Health St Vincent Regional Hospital in Billings, MT is seeking a Security Officer to safeguard patients, staff and visitors across the facility.

Qualifications

  • Current Driver's License (if applicable for the role).
  • Current Basic Life Certification (BLS) for healthcare providers or willing to obtain within 90 days of hire.
  • At least 21 years of age.
  • Montana Security Guard Licensure required within 120 days of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Operates and monitors security technology systems, including surveillance cameras, access control systems, and alarm systems.
  • De-escalation: use verbal and non-verbal strategies to calm individuals and resolve conflicts peacefully.
  • Intervene to protect safety when patients act aggressively or violently; may use restraints when necessary.
  • Ensure regulatory compliance, including HIPAA disclosures to law enforcement as required.
  • Respond to bomb threats and suspicious packages following safety protocols.
  • Participate in drills such as infant abduction and active shooter scenarios.
  • Conduct searches of patients and other individuals, ensuring legal compliance.
  • Perform safety inspections of walking surfaces and fire extinguishers.
  • Enforce parking rules to ensure safety and accessibility.
  • Collaborate with HR and law enforcement on investigations and disclose information appropriately.

Essential Functions


  • Operates and monitors security technology systems, including surveillance cameras, access control systems, and alarm systems. Ensures proper functioning and maintenance of security equipment.

  • De-escalation: Security officers use verbal and non-verbal strategies to calm individuals and resolve conflicts peacefully, minimizing the need for physical force.

  • Dealing with Violent Patients: They intervene to protect the safety of everyone involved when patients act aggressively or violently, including using physical restraints when necessary.

  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensuring compliance with regulations such as HIPAA when reporting crimes or incidents, disclosing only the minimum necessary information to law enforcement.

  • Bomb Threat/Suspicious Package Responses: Trained to respond to bomb threats and suspicious packages, following protocols to ensure the safety of the facility.

  • Participation in Drills: Engaging in exercises like infant abduction and active shooter scenarios to prepare staff for real-life situations.

  • Conducting Searches: Performing respectful and safe searches of patients and searching for narcotics, ensuring compliance with legal requirements.

  • Safety Inspections: Conducting inspections of walking surfaces, fire extinguishers, and overall facility safety to mitigate risks.

  • Parking Enforcement: Enforcing parking regulations to ensure safety and accessibility, focusing on enhancing the patient experience.

  • Investigations: Collaborating with HR and law enforcement to conduct investigations, following protocols for disclosing patient information, and ensuring facility safety.

Minimum Qualifications


  • Current Driver's License (if applicable for the role).

  • Current Basic Life Certification (BLS) for healthcare providers or willing to obtain within 90 days of hire.

  • At least 21 years of age.

  • If located in the State of Montana Security Guard Licensure is required within 120 days of hire.



Preferred Qualifications


  • One-year previous law enforcement, corrections, public safety, military police or security experience.



Physical Requirements


  • Ongoing need for employee to see and read information, labels, documents, monitors, identify equipment and supplies, and be able to assess customer needs.

  • Frequent interactions with providers, colleagues, customers, patients/clients and visitors that require employee to verbally communicate as well as hear and understand spoken information, needs, and issues quickly and accurately.

  • Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate supplies and equipment with precision and accuracy. This includes frequent computer use for typing, accessing needed information, etc.

  • Verbal and written communication skills to compose complete, coherent, and concise reports.

  • Analytical and observational ability to recognize suspicious behavior, criminal activity, and potential safety hazards.

  • Ability to communicate effectively and diplomatically within a multi-functional team in a fast-paced environment.

The hourly range for this position is listed below. Actual hourly rate dependent upon experience.
