BMO is seeking a new hire for its Global Securities Lending Desk based in NY.
The role is an Associate to VP level opportunity on the trading desk to support the growth of BMO’s Prime Brokerage business, synthetic financing capabilities, and other global opportunities. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in managing the daily lifecycle of equity borrows via electronic platforms, ensuring optimal inventory utilization and book efficiency. They will also contribute to the strategic expansion of non-cash collateral programs and funding optimization initiatives. This role requires proactive engagement with counterparties to cultivate electronic trading relationships and source incremental inventory, supporting both specials trading and general collateral flow.

Responsibilities

  • Stock Loan Trader for BMO’s Prime Finance business

  • Trading US equities, providing market insights for internal desks (especially Prime Sales) and direct to clients on borrow rates and availability, covering internal and Prime Brokerage customer short positions

  • Generating revenue on the firm and customer inventory, developing new revenue streams & trading strategies

  • Monitor and process customer locates from internal and external clients including the creation and publishing of ‘Availability” and “Axe” files on a daily basis in a timely and efficient manner

  • Calculate, track, and report P/L daily

  • Process trades/returns efficiently and accurately

  • Communicate with other trading teams to ensure trades & projects are handled timely and controlled, escalating concerns

  • Ensure business is conducted within BMO’s risk appetite and optimize financial resource usage

  • Monitor and process recalls daily, escalating any concerns

  • Proactively seek opportunities for procedural improvements to streamline the business

  • Work with vendors and internal teams to implement tools to improve processes, create efficiencies and increase revenues

Other responsibilities

  • Familiarity with equity repo trading, booking, and collateral management

  • Understanding and familiarity with Tri-party platforms

Qualifications

  • Relevant background of experience in Equity Finance with related industry knowledge of Equity markets, front office exposure for 2+ years with proven trading track record

  • Experience of relevant trading strategies across various markets

  • Highly capable self-starting individual with an exceptional work ethic

  • A thorough understanding of the business objectives while maintaining a strong control ethic and consistently progressing the controls and procedures on the desk to better support the evolving business

  • Educated to degree level in a relevant subject

  • FINRA registered, Series 7, 63

  • Strong interpersonal and quantitative skills. Excellent Excel and Bloomberg skills

Additional qualifications that would be extremely valuable but not required:

  • Technical Proficiency: Familiarity with securities finance platforms (e.g., EquiLend, Pirum), and experience with trade booking systems and reconciliation tools

  • Coding/Automation: Exposure to Python, VBA, or SQL for process automation and data analysis is a strong plus

  • Market Awareness: Deep understanding of equity market microstructure, short interest dynamics, and regulatory frameworks (e.g., SEC Rule 204, Reg SHO)

  • Client-Facing Experience: Ability to interface with Prime Brokerage clients, hedge funds, and internal stakeholders to provide market color and locate solutions

  • Cross-Product Knowledge: Exposure to equity swaps, synthetic financing, and delta one products is highly desirable

  • Experience with Leveraged ETF Stock Loan and Borrow

Base Salary Range:

USD $150,000 - $225,000

Salaries will vary based on factors such as location, skills, experience, education, and qualifications for the role, and may include a commission structure. Salaries for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on number of hours regularly worked. For commission roles, the salary listed above represents BMO Financial Group’s expected target for the first year in this position.

BMO Financial Group’s total compensation package will vary based on the pay type of the position and may include performance-based incentives, discretionary bonuses, as well as other perks and rewards.
