Job summary

HNTB is seeking a senior transportation planning leader to direct a 6–8 person discipline team across the Central States Office locations (Kansas City, MO; Des Moines, IA; St. Louis, MO; Oklahoma City, OK; Overland Park, KS).

The role supervises staffing, budgets, and project delivery from feasibility to construction, while mentoring staff and coordinating with other offices. The ideal candidate has a Bachelor's in a related field with 8 years of experience including 2 years in project

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Planning, Landscape Architecture, Urban Design, Engineering, Geology, Biology, Environmental Science, Anthropology, Archaeology, or related field and 8 years relevant experience including 2 years of project leadership experience.
  • Experience leading a planning section and coordinating budgets, staff, and schedules.
  • Experience with NEPA and transportation project delivery from feasibility through construction.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, monitor, and manage the section's operating budget and forecast updates.
  • Lead the discipline-specific planning section, coordinate priorities, and staff to jobs.
  • Support strategic planning, SSA contracting, and SDA project delivery processes.
  • Participate in marketing activities: client discovery, proposals, interviews, and win-to-work.
  • Maintain client contacts to ensure client satisfaction.
  • Recruit, hire, develop, and retain section staff, including performance reviews and succession planning.
  • Directly manage project delivery activities: scope, schedule, budget, and quality management.
  • Lead a team with 5–10 staff, provide mentorship and development.

What We're Looking ForThis opportunity entails being responsible for leading a professional discipline section in the development and delivery of projects. This position coordinates project priorities, staffing schedules, and staff assignments to ensure clients are provided the proper resources at the appropriate time. Responsible for coaching and mentoring and efficient, productive utilization of staff in providing high-quality service.The ideal candidate will be located in one of our Central States Office (locations in Kansas City, MO; Des Moines, IA; St Louis, MO; and Oklahoma City, OK) and will be responsible for managing and developing a group of 6-8 transportation planners and engineers, providing technical expertise and coordinating the delivery of transportation projects. We are looking for a planner that is experienced and knowledgeable in transportation planning or the NEPA process, providing support from the feasibility/conceptual stage through design and construction. Candidates should be able to share their experience with others in a way that promotes the development of less experienced staff and improves the performance of the whole team.

What You'll Do:
  • Responsible for the development, monitoring, and management of the section's operating budget in support of the group or office operating budget and forecast updates.
  • Responsible for the management, growth, and professional development of discipline-specific planning section. Coordinates section activities, establishes priorities, and staff to jobs. Ensures staff development, mentoring, and training needs are being met. Collaborates with other Sections and Departments within the office on work-sharing needs and opportunities.
  • Supports the implementation of the firm's strategic plan and SSA process on project pursuits in the Section and office, including development of Section-level strategic planning strategies.
  • Supports the implementation of the firm's contracting (SCA) process through project delivery and contracting activities including scope, work plan and fee reviews for all contracting activities impacting the Section.
  • Supports the implementation of the firm's project delivery (SDA) process including Work Planning, Monthly Project Reviews and other project performance methods to ensure quality work, on time, on schedule, to the client's satisfaction.
  • Assists in marketing responsibilities, including client discovery, proposal generation, interviews, and win-to-work activities.
  • Maintains client contacts to ensure client satisfaction.
  • Responsible for the recruitment, hiring, development, and retention of section staff, including development of plan for staff reporting, performance and compensation reviews, and succession.
  • Project Delivery - Actively manages assigned project management activities (project scope, schedule, budget and quality management) and performs technical discipline tasks including research, reports, design, specifications and plan preparation.
  • Leads a team including the direct and indirect supervision of at least 5 but typically 7 - 10 or more employees.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
What You'll Need:
  • Bachelor's degree in Planning, Landscape Architecture, Urban Design, Engineering, Geology, Biology, Environmental Science, Anthropology, Archaeology, or related field and 8 years relevant experience including 2 years of project leadership experience

  • Professional Engineer (PE), American Institute of Certified Planner (AICP), Professional Transportation Planner (PTP), Registered Landscape Architect (RLA), Registered Architect (RA), Certified Environmental Professional (CEP)
  • 10 years of relevant experience
  • 2 years supervisory experience
