Summary:

Performs a variety of clerical duties in connection with preparing, compiling, and maintaining patient and hospital records in the nursing service unit. Coordinates activities such as scheduling patient tests ordered by physicians. Performs clerical and supportive services to assist nursing staff. Transcribes physician’s orders onto unit records and files for nursing personnel. Prepares requisitions for laboratory tests, x-ray exams, blood tests, and consultations requested by physicians. Orders medications and supplies for pre/post-operative patients. Regularly functions as the unit receptionist.

Education:

High School Diploma or GED.

Experience:

3-6 months experience as a receptionist or secretary.

Skills and Abilities:
  • Demonstrated CRT and typing skills.
  • Skills in organization and priority setting.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with peers and other disciplines.
  • Demonstrated customer service skills.
  • Ability to interact effectively with patients, considering cultural background, linguistic skills, and age.
  • Respond to incoming calls and transcribe detailed, accurate messages.
  • File data/reports using system design.
  • Read, write, and communicate effectively in English.
  • Work collaboratively with office peers and other departments.
  • Work independently and identify tasks needing completion.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology (preferred).
  • Maintain confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA.
