Job summary

Insight Global is seeking a Component Engineer to manage the selection, qualification, and lifecycle of electronic, fiber optic, opto-electronic, and optical components across programs. A DoD Secret Clearance is required or obtainable, with extensive experience in optics and related systems.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required with extensive engineering experience in optics.
  • DoD Secret Clearance required or ability to obtain.
  • Minimum 6 years in fiber optic, opto-electronic, and/or optical components/systems.
  • 10+ years delivering technical presentations and leading small groups.
  • Experience with cross-functional teams (Design, Manufacturing, Quality, Supply Chain).

Responsibilities

  • Support selection, qualification, and lifecycle management of optical components.
  • Prepare data for design reviews and CCBs; maintain component requirements and traceability.
  • Develop screening and qualification plans; address obsolescence and long-lead issues.
  • Lead component approvals and support failure analysis investigations.

Job Description

The Component Engineer will support the selection, qualification, and lifecycle management of electronic, fiber optic, opto-electronic, and optical components across multiple programs. Responsibilities include preparing data for design and Configuration Control Board (CCB) reviews, developing screening and qualification plans, resolving obsolescence and long lead-time challenges through alternate component selection, and supporting DMS/EOL activities. This role will lead component approvals, maintain program-specific component requirements, ensure component authenticity and traceability, and support failure analysis investigations. The engineer will collaborate across functional teams to drive component strategies, participate in design reviews, influence system architecture through technical trade studies, and support program execution. This position requires the ability to obtain or transfer an active DoD Secret Clearance prior to start.

Compensation for this role ranges from $70/hr to $89/hr. Exact compensation may vary based on several factors, including skills, experience, and education. Benefit packages for this role will start on the 1st day of employment and include medical, dental, and vision insurance, as well as HSA, FSA, and DCFSA account options, and 401k retirement account access.

Skills and Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree with 12 years of experience
  • DoD Secret Clearance
  • 6 years minimum experience in fiber optic, opto-electronic and/or optical components and systems
  • 10 years of experience in developing and delivering technical presentations and leading small groups
  • 10 yrs of experience and ability to work with cross-functional teams such as: Design Engineering, Manufacturing, Production Engineering, Quality Engineering, or Supply Chain and Procurement Have 8 years of experience in an Engineering role working with fiber optic, opto-electronic and optical components and systems.
  • Solid understanding of geometric and physical optics and fiber optic fundamentals
  • Experience establishing acceptance and qualification standards, validation methodologies, and best practices for fiber optic, opto-electronic and optical components.
  • Hands-on experience with advanced optical and fiber optic metrology and test and inspection equipment.
  • Experience defining engineering processes, standards and technical roadmaps.
  • Experience with supplier technical negotiation and evaluation.
  • Previous leadership & teamwork capabilities, interpersonal communication skills, and activities
  • Experience with Siemens Team Center or similar PLM systems
  • Regulatory compliance (Specialty Metals, Counterfeit Part Prevention, Conflict Minerals)
  • Familiarity with industry standards (ISO, IEC, Telcordia, IPC, VITA, JEDEC, MIL-STD, NASA, etc.)
  • Strong system-level understanding of optical performance, tolerancing and integration tradeoffs
