Job summary

Acme Industries in Elk Grove Village, IL seeks a Quality Gauge Technician to operate the gage room and ensure calibrated, functioning measurement tools for production. The role collaborates with Quality, Engineering, and production across shifts to support ISO 9001:2015 and AS9100D quality systems.

The candidate will perform in-house calibration, manage calibration records, and assist with GD&T-based inspection and first article activity.

Qualifications

  • 2+ years in a gage room, metrology lab, or quality inspection role in a precision manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to read engineering drawings and apply GD&T principles to gage and tool selection.
  • Demonstrated calibration capability for standard measurement tools such as calipers, micrometers, thread gages, dial indicators, bore gages.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain the gage room in a clean, organized, and controlled condition at all times.
  • Issue gages, fixtures, and measurement tools to production personnel ahead of scheduled job needs.
  • Track gage location, assignment, and return using calibration management system or log.
  • Coordinate with production supervisors and setup machinists to anticipate gage needs by shift and job.
  • Receive returned gages, inspect for damage or wear, and process for calibration or repair as appropriate.
  • Perform in-house calibration of standard measurement tools (calipers, micrometers, height gages, thread gages, dial indicators, bore gages, surface plates).
  • Maintain calibration records per ISO 9001:2015 / AS9100D, manage due dates, recall out-of-service gages.
  • Coordinate with external calibration labs for third-party calibration.
  • Label, tag, and document calibrated tools with status, date, and next due date.
  • Investigate out-of-tolerance findings and initiate nonconformance documentation when required.
  • Perform routine maintenance and cleaning of gages and measurement equipment.
  • Identify gages needing repair and coordinate with Quality Director on disposition.
  • Maintain inventory of gages in service, in calibration, under repair, and retired.
  • Read engineering drawings and apply GD&T to identify measurement tools and inspection methods.
  • Support setup machinists in selecting correct gage for a feature and tolerance.
  • Assist Quality with in-process dimensional verification when workload requires.
  • Support FAI and in-process inspection activity as directed by the Quality Director.
  • Maintain calibration documentation and traceability per QMS, participate in internal audits as needed.
  • Follow controlled document and records management requirements for calibration data.
  • Identify and communicate quality or process concerns to the Quality Director.

Position Summary

The Quality Gage Technician is responsible for the day-to-day operation of Acme's gage room and for ensuring that production has the calibrated, functioning measurement tools it needs - when it needs them.

The right person is detail-oriented, methodical, and takes genuine pride in the accuracy and reliability of the tools they manage. This role works directly with Quality, Engineering, and production teams across both shifts and is a critical part of Acme's ISO 9001:2015 and AS9100D quality management system.

Essential Responsibilities Working the Second Shift from 3:00 PM through 11:00 PM
Gage Room Operations & Issuance
  • Maintain the gage room in a clean, organized, and controlled condition at all times
  • Issue gages, fixtures, and measurement tools to production personnel ahead of scheduled job needs
  • Track gage location, assignment, and return using the calibration management system or equivalent log
  • Coordinate with production supervisors and setup machinists to anticipate gage needs by shift and job
  • Receive returned gages, inspect for damage or wear, and process for calibration or repair as appropriate
Gage Calibration
  • Perform in-house calibration of standard measurement tools including calipers, micrometers, height gages, thread gages, dial indicators, bore gages, and surface plates
  • Maintain calibration records in accordance with Acme's QMS requirements and ISO 9001:2015 / AS9100D standards
  • Manage calibration due dates and recall out-of-service or overdue gages from the floor in a timely manner
  • Coordinate with approved external calibration laboratories for tools requiring third-party calibration
  • Label, tag, and document calibrated tools with calibration status, date, and next due date
  • Investigate out-of-tolerance findings and initiate nonconformance documentation when required
Gage Maintenance & Repair
  • Perform routine maintenance and cleaning of gages and measurement equipment to ensure proper function
  • Identify gages requiring repair and coordinate with the Quality Director on disposition (repair, replace, or remove from service)
  • Maintain an accurate inventory of gages in service, in calibration, under repair, and retired
Print Reading & Measurement Support
  • Read engineering drawings and apply GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing) to identify required measurement tools and inspection methods
  • Support setup machinists and operators in selecting the correct gage for a given feature and tolerance
  • Assist Quality with in-process dimensional verification when workload and priority require
  • Support first article inspection (FAI) and in-process inspection activity as directed by the Quality Director
Quality Management System
  • Support Acme's QMS by maintaining calibration documentation, records, and traceability in accordance with ISO 9001:2015 and AS9100D requirements
  • Participate in internal audits related to measurement system and calibration as needed
  • Follow all controlled document and records management requirements for calibration data
  • Identify and communicate quality or process concerns to the Quality Director

  • Minimum 2 years of experience in a gage room, metrology lab, or quality inspection role in a precision manufacturing environment
  • Demonstrated ability to perform in-house calibration of standard measurement tools (calipers, micrometers, thread gages, dial indicators, bore gages)
  • Ability to read engineering drawings and apply GD&T principles to gage and tool selection
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to measurement accuracy - this role directly supports product quality
  • Organized and methodical - able to manage calibration schedules, records, and gage room inventory without losing track
  • Effective communication skills - able to coordinate with production supervisors, setup machinists, and quality personnel across both shifts
  • Basic computer skills including QA applications, spreadsheets, and calibration management software
Preferred
  • Experience with CMM operation or dimensional measurement beyond standard hand tools
  • Familiarity with third-party calibration lab coordination and traceability documentation
  • Experience working in an ISO 9001 or AS9100 certified environment
  • Experience with UniPoint or similar quality management software
  • ASQ Certified Quality Inspector (CQI) or similar credential a plus
