State of Indiana – INDOT Indianapolis Shop is seeking a seasonal mechanic to assist in stockrooms, perform basic maintenance, and support other mechanics in a fast-paced shop environment.

You will handle oil changes, tire repairs, brake work, lights, and minor electrical tasks, while upholding safety practices and maintaining shop organization. Requires HS diploma and a valid driver’s license; benefits are limited to the seasonal role.

Qualifications

  • High School Graduate or equivalent.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Knowledge of safety practices for repair and maintenance of heavy equipment, vehicles and/or motorized equipment.
  • Knowledge of heavy and light duty vehicle and equipment repair.
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate clearly; able to work in a multi-functional team.

Responsibilities

  • Perform basic maintenance and repairs on equipment under supervision.
  • Assist other mechanics on their jobs.
  • Keep the shop clean and orderly.
  • Perform oil changes and preventative maintenance.
  • Repair and change tires; inspect vehicles/equipment for damage.

Role Overview
  • Assisting in the stockrooms and running parts as needed.
  • Cleaning the shop and yard.
  • Basic automotive knowledge is preferred.
  • Perform and/or Assist other Mechanics with:
  • Oil changes / PMs.
  • Tire repairs and replacement
  • Brake repairs on cars and light trucks.
  • Lights and minor electrical repairs
  • Exhaust system repairs.
  • Report issues to Working Leads or Shop Supervisors.
  • Welding experience is welcomed.
Location

This position is with INDOT's Indianapolis Shop.

Pay Rate

This position pays an hourly rate of $18.00.

A Day In The Life
  • Preform, under supervision, basic maintenance and repairs on equipment
  • Assisting other mechanics on their jobs
  • Keeping the shop clean and in an orderly manner
  • Preform oil changes and preventative maintenance
  • Repair and change tires
  • Change or repair lights on equipment
  • Pick up parts when required by supervisorInspect vehicles/equipment for damage
  • Attend appropriate training school, safety meetings, mechanic meetings or related meetings
  • Provide service and repair of vehicles and equipment on emergency basis

What You'll Need For Success
  • High School Graduate or equivalent
  • Must possesses a valid driver’s license
  • Working knowledge of appropriate safety practices associated with repair and maintenance heavy equipment, vehicles and/or motorized equipment
  • Knowledge of heavy and light duty vehicle and equipment repair
  • Skill in operating hand & power tools related to repair & maintenance of vehicles & equipment
  • Ability to carry out oral and written instructions and to complete records and reports
  • Must have ability to read, write, and communicate clearly
  • Ability to follow directions and work as a part of a team
  • Ability to perform physical activities such as lifting, dragging, stooping, standing and walking for long periods of time
  • Ability to carrying out basic functions on the computer
  • Ability to work in a multi-functional team
Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports

This role may be utilized in a supervisory capacity based on agency needs.

Benefits Of Employment With The State Of Indiana

This seasonal position does not offer benefits and is limited to 180 working days in an eleven (11) month continuous period.
