Job summary

The Commonwealth of Massachusetts' Department of Conservation & Recreation is seeking a Seasonal State Firefighter II for Myles Standish State Forest this summer 2026. Start date is 9/6/2026 and end date is 10/31/2026, with biweekly salary of $1,895.68 and one opening.

Incumbents will work outdoors in varied terrain, respond to fires, train staff, perform inspections, and document activities as part of a dedicated public safety team.

Qualifications

• Introduction to Incident Command System, ICS-100.
• IS-700 National Incident Management System.
• Basic Wildland Firefighter Training, S-130.
• Introduction to Wildfire Behavior, S-190.
• Human Factors in the Wildland Fire Service, L-180.
• Intermediate Wildland Fire Behavior, S-290.
• Possess a current driver's license for the assignment.

Responsibilities

• Suppress fires at the direction of the Incident Supervisor using standard techniques and equipment.
• Train staff in fire prevention and update safety posters.
• Calculate daily fire ratings using NFDRS and weather data for departments statewide.
• Maintain firefighting equipment and ensure preparedness for emergencies.
• Confer with governmental units, maintain records and prepare inspection reports.
• Perform initial size-up of emergencies and report to the chain of command.
• Assist with on-site inspections and remote observation of fires on state lands.
• Provide tactical fire line leadership as directed.
• Report violations of fire laws to a supervisor.
