Job summary

Commonwealth of Massachusetts seeks two Continuous Forest Inventory Contractors to support a MassWildlife pilot. The Department of Fish and Game (DFG) is the state agency responsible for conservation of the state's natural resources. DFG exercises responsibility over the Commonwealth's marine and freshwater fisheries, wildlife, plants, and natural communities, and provides outdoor recreation opportunities to the public.

MassWildlife is responsible for the conservation of freshwater fish and wildlife in the Commonwealth, including endangered plants and animals. MassWildlife restores, protects, and manages land for wildlife to thrive and for people to enjoy.

The Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife is seeking two (2) Continuous Forest Inventory (CFI) Contractors . The Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife (MassWildlife) is seeking qualified individuals to assist with a Continuous Forest Inventory (CFI) pilot project. Primary duty will be completing field data collection focused on forest composition and structural metrics on Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs) across the Commonwealth.

Under the supervision of the Habitat Restoration and Management Program Manager, the Habitat Program CFI Contractors will establish monitoring plots and collect forest metric data at 50 sites across the state. Work will focus on implementing newly developed CFI protocols and working with Habitat Program staff to identify any necessary refinements to the methods. The CFI Crew members are responsible for ensuring safe, efficient, and effective field operations; maintaining detailed project records; and contributing to the evaluation and reporting of CFI pilot project outcomes .

Anticipated Start/End Dates: October 1, 2026 – June 25, 2027. 40 hours / week with a salary range of $ 30.71 - $35.26 /hr (including $2.68 / hr Payment in Lieu of Benefits).

Specific Duties Include:

Utilize forest ecology knowledge to contribute to the implementation of a CFI pilot program.

Utilize maps, GPS devices, and other instruments to navigate to points in remote areas across challenging terrain.

Establish monitoring plots and install permanent markers.

Accurately and efficiently complete plot measurements and record data.

Utilize GPS and GIS software (ArcGIS, ESRI FieldMaps).

Coordinate logistics for field operations, including equipment, materials, transportation, and safety supplies.

Work in both a team environment and independently. Maintain professional attitude and represent the Division.

Communicate regularly with supervisor and Habitat Program team to provide progress updates, report challenges, and recommend improvements to field operations.

PreferredQualifications:

• Knowledge of Massachusetts forest ecology and identification of Massachusetts trees, shrubs, and woody plants in both summer and winter conditions.
• Must be comfortable spending long periods of time outdoors.
• Must have a valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record to drive state vehicles and trailers.
• Prior experience in forest metrics, field measurements, and data collection following established protocols.
• Ability to identify common herbaceous vegetation.
• Skill in the use of precision measuring devises and instrumentation used in forest resource management.
• Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
• Experience with data management and quality assurance.
• Experience navigating off trail in remote terrain using compass, maps, GPS and other navigation tools.
• Knowledge of the safety practices and procedures followed in forest resource management operations.
• Previous experience with mapping technology (GPS, ArcGIS, FieldMaps)
• Experience using Microsoft office programs, Teams, and Sharepoint.
• Ability to work outdoors under a variety of field conditions, including inclement weather, uneven terrain, and remote locations.
• In-state travel will be required.

License and/or Certification:

Possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Class D Motor Vehicle Operator’s License, or equivalent, and an acceptable driving record with the ability to travel to check stations and field sites during the duration of the position.
