General Statement

The Sales Associate greets visitors, provides courteous and helpful service to science store patrons, and assists customers in the selection and purchase of science store merchandise. This is a part-time, seasonal position ending at the end of September 2025. Must be available to work a flexible schedule, including weekends.

Reports to: Food Service & Retail Business Specialist

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Provide customer service in the science store, including explaining products, assisting in locating merchandise, and helping customers select and purchase items. Must be knowledgeable of merchandise, pricing, location, and backstock.
2. Operate point of sale register/computer, perform transactions, and manage cash handling, including opening and closing the register and cash drops.
3. Maintain an orderly store appearance, including cleaning and arranging displays.
4. Oversee customer conduct to minimize shrinkage and damage.
5. Prepare daily stock lists, pull stock from the warehouse, and bring it to the floor.
6. Assist in training new sales associates and coordinate breaks and lunches in the absence of the lead or supervisor.
7. Assist with merchandise counts and annual inventory.
8. Answer telephone and assist customers as needed.
9. Read and understand emergency procedures manual.
10. Attend Employee Training Program.

Physical Requirements

Position involves sitting, standing, and walking. Ability to exert up to 10 pounds of force frequently and up to 20 pounds occasionally to move objects. Physical presence at the location during all assigned hours is required.

Experience, Education, or Skills

• Six months to one year experience in customer service and cash handling. Knowledge of Balboa Park, San Diego attractions, and the Fleet Science Center is helpful.
• Ability to communicate verbally.
• Ability to perform basic mathematical operations.
