The eight-hour day begins at 7:00 AM, with long days possible as the season advances; overtime may apply, and weekends/holidays are off for Thanksgiving and Christmas. A valid driver license is required for Parks/Facilities crews.
Cary is seeking driven individuals who are enthusiastic about maintaining our communities as seasonal leaf collectors. Each year we facilitate leaf collection to remove fallen leaves and debris from our roads, sidewalks and facility grounds. We pride ourselves in doing so with excellence and efficiency.
Our Seasonal Leaf Collector positions are full-time seasonal positions working outdoors from October through February in all weather conditions. Employees will primarily work as a team utilizing vacuum trucks, rakes, blowers, and other hand tools to remove leaves.
Employees will begin working an eight-hour day starting in October, with a start time of 7:00 AM, which may be expanded to a 10 to 12-hour workday, beginning at 6:30 AM, as the work season progresses. This position may last through January 2027 with the possibility of evening and weekend work (overtime). Collection crews will not work on Thanksgiving or Christmas Day.
Applicants will be considered for both facilities/parks and streets/residential crews based upon experience and operational need. Leaf collectors working in our parks and facilities will be required to have a valid drivers license.
May also assist public works staff in landscape maintenance, including mowing, trimming, grounds-keeping and facilities maintenance. Some knowledge of landscape operations, tools, equipment, and materials used in grounds maintenance; ability to interact positively with the general public; ability to understand written and oral instructions; ability to work independently or within a team setting; ability to perform manual labor under various weather conditions; ability to use a mobile device for communication, work orders and time entry.
Works outdoors in all weather conditions using a motorized leaf vacuum and rake.
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a high school diploma or GED and one year of experience in manual trades.
The work environment is very dusty and physically demanding; the work in this position requires constant, fast-paced walking while raking or operating the leave machine over a 10-hour work day, typically six days per week. Employees must have the ability to walk, stand for long periods of time, bend, squat, lift moderate to heavy weight, and have the ability to see, speak and hear.
