Purpose/Description
Temporary (SEASONAL) Position - Temporary Laborers in the Roads Maintenance Division assist in maintaining highways and structures on state, municipal and rural roads and rights-of-way. Duties may include litter pick up from roads and freeways, flagging traffic, working an air hammer and post pounder, pounding stakes and posts, mixing concrete, cold patching, shoveling asphalt and debris, changing under blades, assisting in snow and ice operations, use of hand tools, lawn mowers, and power tools, assisting tradespersons, cleaning, and other related duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge
- Public Safety and Security Knowledge of relevant equipment, policies, procedures, and strategies to promote effective local, state, county safety operations for the protection of people and institutions.
- Basic knowledge of hand tools and janitorial supplies.
Required Tasks
- Major Duties:
- Flag motorists to warn them of obstacles or repair work ahead.
- Set out signs and cones around work areas to divert traffic.
- Drive equipment with adjustable attachments to mow grass and weeds including hand tools.
- Haul and spread sand, gravel, and clay to fill washouts and repair road shoulders.
- Dump, spread, shovel and tamp asphalt, to repair joints and patch broken pavement.
- Clean and clear debris from culverts, catch basins, ditches, and other drain structures.
- Other Duties:
- Remove litter and debris from roadways.
- Remove and replace snow and ice equipment such as scrapers or under-blades during winter maintenance.
- Use jackhammers and other hand tools.
- Assist in install or repair guardrails, road shoulders, berms, highway markers, warning signals, and highway lighting, using hand tools and power tools.
- Clean, and repair drainage systems, bridges, tunnels, and other structures.
- Perform roadside landscaping work, such as clearing weeds and brush, and planting trees.
- Assist tradespersons.
- Clean bathrooms, or other areas.
- Other related duties, as assigned.
- Educational Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Valid Operator's license and a safe and acceptable driving record (no more than 7 points)
