Job summary

Summit County Government seeks a skilled Equipment Operator to perform road maintenance using heavy equipment and hand tools in all weather conditions. You will operate graders, loaders, backhoes, and other machinery under supervision to keep county roads safe and functional.

Responsibilities include daily equipment inspections, coordinating with mechanics, assisting with snow plowing, patching, dust suppression, and traffic control.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED; vocational training is a plus.
  • Experience as a heavy equipment operator is preferred.
  • Valid Colorado driver license with Class B CDL; pass physical and drug test.

  • Operate heavy equipment such as graders, loaders, backhoes, and dozers to maintain roads.
  • Perform daily inspections and coordinate with mechanics for repairs.
  • Assist with snow plowing, patching, dust suppression, and road sweeping.
  • Provide traffic control and site safety while working.
  • Record maintenance activities and complete required paperwork.

Job description

Performs a variety of supervised and unsupervised road maintenance operations using various types of heavy equipment and hand tools, as more particularly described below, at the direction of the Road & Bridge Operations Manager and Foreman.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS/DUTIES:

The incumbent in this position must be able to successfully perform the following essential job functions and duties:

Operate, or be trained to operate, heavy equipment such as motor graders, trucks and/or trailers, loaders, backhoes, dozers, excavators, steamers and sweepers to grade roads, plow snow, haul gravel and other materials, repair bridges, install and repair culverts, and complete other projects required to maintain County infrastructure and rights-of-way; assess equipment capabilities and decide which equipment is best suited for a particular job; provide traffic control flagging and signage installation; responsible for operating equipment safely and keeping equipment functioning and in good repair, including such tasks as conducting daily and required routine equipment inspections to identify needed maintenance and notifying mechanic of major maintenance items; perform preventative or minor maintenance such as wearing edge changes and lubrication; may be assigned to seasonal road maintenance project crews for asphalt patching/paving, dust suppression, road sweeping, crack sealing, tree trimming, or other maintenance tasks; assist other workers in performing their duties; respond politely and accurately to public inquiries onsite regarding road and bridge work that is being performed or direct comments to supervisor as appropriate. Must be available to work overtime and/or on a flexible schedule on an as needed basis. Other duties as assigned.

Ability to operate a variety of heavy equipment and to observe safety regulations; ability to follow written and verbal instructions; ability to complete projects without supervision; working knowledge of principles, practices, and techniques of mechanical equipment and those common to road and bridge construction and maintenance; ability to understand and complete related paperwork as necessary; ability to use a hand level as necessary in job setup; basic knowledge of, or ability to learn and comprehend, laws and regulations governing roads and rights-of-way. General knowledge of work zone safety practices. The ability to use GIS, common word processing software, spreadsheets, and other general accounting and human resources software are a plus.

Working Environment/Physical Demands: Work is performed mostly outdoors. Must be able to work in all weather conditions and stand for extended periods of time. Must have the ability to perform strenuous labor for extended periods of time. Must have the ability to lift heavy parts and tools. Ability to work in confined spaces such as trenches, underneath equipment for service, inside culverts or manholes for maintenance or repairs. Ability to tolerate exposure to dirt, adverse weather conditions, extreme hot or cold temperatures, or exhaust fumes.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND FORMAL TRAINING:

High school diploma or GED, vocational school desirable, any experience as a heavy equipment operator or a combination of education, training and experience which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities required for the job are a plus.

LICENSES OR CERTIFICATES:

Valid Colorado Driver License, minimum Class B CDL, A restriction acceptable. Must pass a physical examination and drug test in order to be granted a CDL.
