Position
Seasonal Communications Officer
Salary: $21.73 hourly - $30.84 hourly
Closing date: 3/31/2027 (ongoing review of applications)
Responsibilities
Answer emergency and non-emergency calls and dispatch appropriate personnel.
Minimum Qualifications
- Graduation from a standard senior high school or GED equivalent, as recognized by the United States Department of Education (USDE) or Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).
- Must be at least 19 years of age.
- Two (2) years of work experience as a Police, Fire, EMS, and E911 dispatcher; or
- One (1) year of current, continuous experience as a Public Safety Calltaker with the City of Dothan in the Communications Officer progression.
- Possession of current certification in Association of Public Safety Communications Officials (APCO) Public Safety Telecommunicator I (PST1) course (40 hours initial course) or equivalent certification.
- Possession of current certification in American Heart Association Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) course or American Red Cross equivalent.
- Possession of current certification in National Crime Information Center (NCIC) and Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) Criminal Justice Information Center (ACJIC) certification or equivalent state certification.
- Possession of current certification in Association of Public Safety Communications Officials (APCO) Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) Course (preferred).
- Possession of current certification in Association of Public Safety Communications Officials (APCO) Communications Training Officer (CTO) Course (preferred).
- Completion of Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) training in Southern Software Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) (preferred).
- Completion of PSAP training in Southern Software Records Management System (RMS) (preferred).
- Completion of PSAP training in Southern Software Mapping Data System (MDS) (preferred).
- Completion of PSAP training in Motorola Emergency Communications System ECS-1000, Soloacom 9-1-1 Equipment (preferred).
- Completion of PSAP training in Public Safety Radio Training/Experience in actual radio transmission environment (preferred).
Condition Of Employment/Promotion/Demotion/Transfer
Must complete and accept Certification of Understanding and Condition of Employment/Promotion/Demotion/Transfer form(s).
Necessary Special Requirements
- Ability to maintain recertification by ACJIC/NCIC (Alabama Criminal Justice Information Center).
- Ability to obtain certification and recertification in APCO Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) course per department standards and requirements as required by the Alabama Public Safety Telecommunication Program.
- Ability to obtain certification as an APCO Communications Training Officer (CTO).
- Ability to maintain certification in CPR.
- Must maintain information confidentiality throughout employment.
- Must continuously progress satisfactorily throughout the training program within the probationary period.
- Subject to various background investigations including criminal, credit, past employment, and reference checks.
- Required to submit to Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with city policy.
- Must meet employment physical standards which include drug/alcohol testing.
