Job summary

Jackson County Hospital District in Marianna, FL seeks a Surgical Tech to support the Circulating Nurse in the operating room. You will maintain sterile technique, prepare rooms, and assist with gowning, gloving, instrument handling, and draping.

This role emphasizes patient safety, accurate counting of supplies, labeling checks, and passing instruments quickly during procedures. BLS is required; ACLS/PALS are preferred. On-site position with basic computer skills.

Responsibilities

• Aid the Circulating Nurse in room preparation using sterile technique.
• Review surgeon's preference card and pull needed supplies and equipment.
• Open the case using sterile technique and standard OR procedures.
• Place instruments and supplies in designated areas; discard contaminated packages.
• Scrub sink area and perform surgical scrubs.
• Wear gown and gloves using closed gloving method.
• Count all supplies with the circulating nurse.
• Check labels on solutions/drugs and label items on sterile field.
• Assist surgeon with gowning, gloving, and draping.
• Pass instruments quickly while keeping them clean of blood.
• Maintain patient safety at all times.
• Count items at case closing per sponge and needle counts.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Prior to the first case of the day aid the Circulating Nurse in prepare room assigned using sterile technique.
• Review surgeon’s preference card for all supplies needed. Pull the needed supplies and equipment for each procedure if not done the previous evening.
• Open the case using the basic principles of sterile technique and standard operating room procedure.
• Place instruments and supplies in appropriate areas. Discard packages in uncontaminated container (leave in OR room) when the case is opened. Scrub sink area outside the operating room and begin surgical scrub using disposable brushes. Scrub both hands and elbows per procedure.
• When entering operating room, hold hands upward and not dripping. Use sterile towel to dry hands and arms for proper drying technique. Antiseptic hand gel can be used per product directions.
• Appropriate gown and glove using the “closed gloving method”.
• Count all supplies needed for the procedure with circulating nurse assistance.
• Check all labels of solutions and drugs for date with circulating nurse or OR technician. (All supplies are to labeled when on the sterile field)
• Assist surgeon and assistant in gowning and gloving.
• Assist surgeon in draping the patient using sterile technique.
• Place equipment and instruments readily available per physician’s preference.
• Ability to pass instruments quickly to surgeon when needed keeping them clean of blood and tissue.
• Aware of importance of patient safety at all times.
• When case closing; count all items at appropriate times with the circulating nurse per Procedure on Sponge and Needle Counts

Requirements

Regulatory Requirements

• Completes annual educational requirements within the assigned time frame.
• Maintains regulatory requirements, including all state, federal and Joint Commission regulations related to their department and, as appropriate, to the hospital.
• May be a licensed nurse (RN/LPN), Certified Scrub Tech or on job trained
• BLS - required
