Job summary

Gerdau North America is seeking a safety-focused Yard Operator in Roanoke, VA. You will inspect and grade scrap, operate material handlers, and support daily yard operations to meet quality and shipping requirements.

You will work with supervisors, scale operators, and customers, follow safety procedures, and help maintain a clean, organized site. Prior scrap yard or heavy equipment experience is a plus, and we value reliability and a willingness to learn.

Qualifications

• HS diploma preferred; prior scrap yard or heavy equipment experience is a plus.
• Ability to learn scrap grading and inspection processes.
• Strong commitment to workplace safety.
• Excellent teamwork and communication skills.
• Work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
• Reliable, self-motivated, eager to learn.

Responsibilities

• Follow all safety, environmental, and operational procedures.
• Inspect and grade incoming scrap materials for quality.
• Operate material handlers, loaders, and other mobile equipment.
• Load and unload scrap materials per quality specs.
• Ensure outbound materials meet safety and quality requirements.
• Complete daily equipment inspections and routine care.
• Identify and report equipment issues and safety hazards.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe yard.
• Provide excellent customer service and support daily operations.
• Assist with inventory counts and rail operations as applicable.
• Collaborate with team to improve efficiency and safety.
