Job Summary

An entry to mid-level scientist who independently conceptualizes and conducts research leading to original ideas or solutions to relevant problems. May lead projects and supervise others.

In this position, you will support multiple focus areas within the Nourish and Scent R&D teams.

Examples of focus areas include:

  • GC/MS method development, operation, and mass spectral data interpretation, including structural elucidation.
  • Delivery systems: analytical support for prototypes and their suitability in applications. Develop, deploy, and apply analytical methods to guide R&D and ICD on new prototypes in various consumer product formats under supervision.
  • Ingredient discovery: analytical support in isolating and identifying new Nourish & Scent Ingredients.
  • Maintain and curate GC/MS spectral libraries and internal database systems.

The team supports all R&D research and Nourish and Scent commercial platforms with qualitative and quantitative data. You will participate in project teams and develop new analytical technologies. Documenting and reporting findings effectively to stakeholders is essential.

This role requires an in-depth understanding of gas chromatography and mass spectrometry, as well as related areas like extraction or headspace theory. Conducting bench experiments using broad analytical chemistry knowledge is involved. Experience with organic chemistry of small molecules and physical chemistry is a plus.

Responsibilities:

  1. Interpretation of mass spectral data to elucidate structures of small organic molecules (20%)
  2. Development of technical approaches and methods (15%)
  3. Operation and maintenance of GC/MS instrumentation (40%)
  4. Maintenance of spectral databases (15%)
  5. Act as a project team representative and manage assigned project areas (10%)

Decision Making:

Operates under supervision of senior technical leadership. Changes to technical approaches are aligned with senior leadership. Limited autonomy in project execution.

Requirements:

  • Advanced technical knowledge in chromatographic separations (gas chromatography) with detectors like FID, MS, TCD, etc., and sample preparation.
  • Ability to solve complex technical problems.
  • Understanding of GC/MS spectra and EI fragmentation pathways.
  • Proven success in developing and implementing analytical technologies.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Experience:

  • Required: BS in Chemistry with 3-5 years of industrial experience or MS in Analytical/Organic Chemistry with 0-3 years of experience in sample prep, automation, chromatography, and mass spectrometry.
  • Preferred: Experience with organic chemistry of small molecules, physical chemistry, and familiarity with techniques like HPLC, NMR, and flavor/fragrance chemistry.
