Job Summary

We are seeking an entry to mid-level scientist who will independently conceptualize and conduct research leading to original ideas or solutions to relevant problems. The role may involve leading projects and supervising others.

In this position, you will support multiple focus areas within the Nourish and Scent R&D teams, including:

  • GC/MS method development: operation and mass spectral data interpretation, including structural elucidation.
  • Delivery systems: analytical support for prototypes and their suitability in applications. Develop and apply analytical methods to guide R&D and ICD on new prototypes in consumer products.
  • Ingredient discovery: support in the isolation and identification of new ingredients.
  • Database maintenance: maintain GC/MS spectral libraries and internal databases.

The team supports R&D research and commercial platforms with qualitative and quantitative data. You will participate in project teams, develop new analytical technologies, document findings, and report to stakeholders.

This role requires an in-depth understanding of gas chromatography and mass spectrometry, as well as related areas such as extraction and headspace theory. Conducting bench experiments with broad analytical chemistry knowledge is essential. Experience with organic and physical chemistry is a plus.

Responsibilities
  1. Interpret mass spectral data to elucidate structures of small organic molecules (20%)
  2. Develop technical approaches and methods (15%)
  3. Operate and maintain GC/MS instrumentation (40%)
  4. Maintain spectral and structure databases (15%)
  5. Act as a project team representative and manage assigned project areas (10%)
Decision Making

Operates under supervision of senior technical leadership. Changes to technical approaches are aligned with leadership, with limited latitude for execution adjustments.

Requirements
  • Advanced technical knowledge in chromatographic separations (gas chromatography) with various detectors (FID, MS, TCD, etc.) and sample preparation.
  • Ability to solve complex technical problems.
  • Understanding of GC/MS spectra and EI fragmentation pathways.
  • Proven success in developing and implementing analytical technologies.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
Experience

Required: BS in Chemistry with 3-5 years of industrial experience or MS in Analytical/Organic Chemistry with 0-3 years of experience in sample prep, automation, chromatography, and mass spectrometry.

Preferred: Experience with small molecule organic chemistry, physical chemistry, and familiarity with techniques like HPLC, NMR, and flavor/fragrance chemistry.
