Job description

Job Summary

Entry to mid-level scientist who independently conceptualizes and conducts research that leads
to original ideas or solutions to relevant problems. May lead projects and may supervise
others.

In this position, you will support multiple focus areas within the Nourish and Scent R&D teams.

Examples of the focus:
* GC/MS method development, operation, and mass spectral data interpretation, including structural elucidation.
* Delivery systems: analytical support around newly developed prototypes of delivery systems and their suitability in applications. Develop, deploy and apply information-rich analytical methods that guide R&D and ICD on use of these new prototypes in various consumer product formats under supervision of senior technical staff.
* Ingredient discovery: analytical support in the isolation and identification of new Nourish & Scent Ingredients.
* Maintain and curate GCMS spectral libraries and internal database systems.

The team supports all R&D research, as well as Nourish and Scent commercial platforms with qualitative and quantitative data. As such, you will participate on project teams and develop new analytical technologies. While documenting is one part of the role, it is equally important to effectively report on projects and findings to stakeholders.

This position will require an in-depth understanding of theory and practice of gas chromatography and mass spectrometry in all forms, as well as adjunct areas such as extraction or headspace theory. It involves conducting bench experiments employing a broad knowledge analytical chemistry. Experience with organic chemistry of smaller molecules and physical chemistry is a plus.

Responsibilities:

1. Interpretation of mass spectral data to elucidate structures of small organic molecules (20%)
2. Development of technical approaches and methods. ( (15%)
3. Operation and maintenance of GC/MS instrumentation (40%)
4. Maintenance of structure and spectral databases (15%)
5. Act as a functional representative on project teams and manage assigned project areas. (10%)

Decision Making:

Operates under supervision of senior technical leadership. Changes to technical conceptual approaches in alignment with senior technical leadership. Limited latitude for changes related to execution of assigned projects.

Requirements:

* Demonstrated advanced technical knowledge in chromatographic separations (gas chromatography.) coupled with various detectors (FID, MS, TCD, etc.), sample preparation
* Demonstrated ability to solve complex technical problems.
* Conceptual understanding of GCMS spectra, EI fragmentation pathways.
* Proven track record of success in developing and implementing new analytical technologies.
* High quality written and oral communication skills.

Experience:

Required:
* BS degree in Chemistry with 3-5 years minimum of industrial experience or MS degree in Analytical and/or Organic Chemistry with 0-3 years of industrial experience in sample preparation, automation, chromatography, and mass spectrometry.

Preferred:
* Experience with organic chemistry of smaller molecules and physical chemistry.
* Candidate who is familiar with other analytical techniques (isolation, HPLC, NMR) and that has a general knowledge of flavor and fragrance chemistry.
