Job summary

The Independent Media Initiative is looking for a Science Media Researcher to help build its scientific voice by identifying compelling science stories across the country. The role involves evaluating creator pitches and developing story leads for independent media engagement.

Job description

The Science Media Researcher helps build IMI's scientific voice, identifying the most compelling researchers and stories across the country and shaping how independent media engages with science.

50x50: Science Across America is an IMI initiative connecting scientists and independent creators across all 50 states. The Science Media Researcher supports that mission by helping identify, develop, and vet the science stories at the heart of the project.

You will:
  • Identify compelling, original science stories across all 50 states
  • Review and evaluate creator pitches, bringing scientific expertise to assess authenticity, accuracy, and story potential
  • Find and vet researchers and scientists who could be a strong fit for creator partnerships
  • Develop story leads into viable concepts ready for creator development
  • Help shape IMI's broader scientific identity and voice
What We're Looking For
  • Advanced degree or significant research experience in a scientific field: you understand how science actually works and can evaluate the quality and originality of a research story from the inside
  • Editorial instincts: you know a good story when you see one
  • Familiarity with independent online media and the creator landscape is a plus
  • Self-directed and able to manage a broad research scope with minimal oversight
