Broward College is seeking a Science Lab Technician for the North Campus. The role supports the Science Laboratory Manager by preparing, setting up, breaking down, and cleaning up Physical Sciences labs according to safety procedures and lab activity needs.

Qualifications

  • Minimum Education: Associate degree
  • Minimum Experience/Training: Three or more years of functional experience in a science laboratory setting that includes the preparation and dilution of chemical solutions as well as hazardous material training.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares labs according to the assigned functional discipline and gathers all materials needed for activities.
  • Assists with preparation, dilution and standardization of chemical solutions, including measuring temperature, volume and mass.
  • Returns the lab to its pre-lab condition by cleaning, disinfecting surfaces, and making minor repairs as needed.
  • Assists with gravimetric analysis, pH measurement, calibrating spectrophotometers, and performing titrations.
  • Maintains inventory of laboratory supplies and equipment; disposes of waste per safety protocols.
  • Assists faculty with lab activities and ensures equipment is safe and reliable.

Job Profile SummaryUnder the limited supervision of the Science Laboratory Manager, assists with the preparation, set up, break down, and clean-up of the Physical Sciences laboratories according to the type of lab activities and experiments performed using established procedures and in compliance with all safety regulationsThis position allows eligible veterans and their spouses to claim Veterans’ Preference pursuant to Florida Statute 295. Laboratory preparation involves presentation of all materials required for the appropriate activity or experiment, including glassware, benchtop equipment, molecular models, chemical solutions, etc. Daily - 20%: Assists with preparation, dilution and standardization of chemical solutions, which may include calculating appropriate concentrations, measuring temperature, volume and mass. Weighing, mixing, heating, cooling, and filtration. Dispensing in appropriate containers, and use of equipment such as analytical balances, top loading balances, hotplates, pH meters, multimeters, and spectrophotometers. Daily - 20%: Returns the lab to the condition present before the day's activities by cleaning and returning all materials, disinfecting surfaces and supplies, and making any minor repairs as necessary. Daily - 10%: Assists lab manager with gravimetric analysis, determining physical and other properties(such as melting point, boiling point), pH measurement as well as maintaining pH electrodes, calibrating spectrophotometers, and performing titrations. Daily - 5%: Assists lab manager with maintaining inventory of laboratory supplies and equipment applicable to the functional discipline. Daily - 5%: Dispose of all waste materials properly according to established safety and regulatory protocols Other - 5%: Assists faculty with lab activities. Other - 5%: Maintains laboratory equipment to assure safe and reliable operation by cleaning as needed and testing/calibrating before class begins. Other - 5%: Performs related duties as assigned.Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:Operational knowledge and understanding in area of responsibility such as chemistry, biochemistry, physics, oceanography, astronomy, earth science, geology. Strong knowledge, understanding and skills in area of responsibility; including an understanding of concepts and principles of related areas and functions. Basic Electrical Safety. Ability to manage own work to job and performance standards. Ability to participate as an active team member. Ability to lead a group of employees. Requires intermediate to advanced knowledge of computer systems, i.e. Microsoft Office Products as well as specialized computer systems.
