Job summary

Temple Health – Temple University Health System is seeking a Laboratory Animal Technician to ensure humane care and welfare of research animals. The technician performs daily checks, administers treatments, maintains sick animal records, and notifies investigators and staff.

The role involves screening rodent colonies for murine pathogens, collecting samples for microbiology, serology, parasitology, and PCR, collecting tissues during necropsies, and offering technical assistance to laboratories

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent required.
• 1 year experience in biological sciences required.
• Bachelor's degree in Biological Science preferred.
• Experience with Filemaker Pro preferred.

Responsibilities

• Perform daily checks and treatment of sick animals and maintain records.

Job description

This position ensures the humane care and treatment of laboratory animals. The Technician is responsible for daily checks and treatment of animals marked as sick by staff which includes maintaining records of sick animals, treatments ordered by the attending veterinarian, notifications of principal investigators and their staff and monitoring animal room conditions as related to animal health and well-being. The technician is responsible for screening of rodent colonies for murine pathogens which includes collections and processing of samples for microbiology, serology, parasitology and Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). The technician will collect tissue samples during necropsies to ascertain cause of disease. The individual will provide technical assistance to research laboratories upon request.
