Internal Posting: Lieutenant - Troop 4 Headquarters

This posting is exclusively for current SCHP officers.

The Lieutenant position at Troop 4 Headquarters involves managing law enforcement and administrative duties under the supervision of the Troop Commander. The role includes assuming Troop Commander duties in their absence, maintaining operational readiness, and supervising law enforcement programs.

1. Assist in planning, coordinating, and implementing law enforcement operations.
2. Monitor enforcement of South Carolina motor vehicle and criminal laws within the jurisdiction.
3. Analyze enforcement data, prepare cases, and serve as a collision investigation specialist and expert witness.
4. Supervise field training and background investigations of patrol applicants.
5. Investigate internal and public complaints impartially.
6. Disseminate information effectively, review case work, and ensure compliance with policies and laws.
7. Evaluate employee performance and facilitate training participation.
8. Prepare reports, memorandums, and correspondence; review payroll and personnel documents.
9. Maintain law enforcement certification and perform functions related to civil defense, emergency preparedness, and public protection.
10. Coordinate emergency operations, traffic, and crowd control at major events.
11. Establish partnerships with law enforcement agencies and community organizations.
12. Participate in public safety education and monitor information dissemination.
13. Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements:

• Time in Grade: Must have held Sergeant rank for at least six months or currently be a First Sergeant.
• Education: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent plus five years of law enforcement experience.
• Promotion: Must have scored 70+ on a promotional exam and completed a promotional interview within two years of vacancy closing date.
• Disciplinary: No current suspensions or pending investigations; no recent involuntary demotions or unsuccessful performance ratings.
• Residency: Must comply with residency policies within four months of promotion.
• Experience: Management, supervision, planning, and law enforcement expertise, including traffic law.
• Certification: Must possess Class I law enforcement certification for South Carolina.

Additional requirements include making critical decisions under limited supervision, potential overnight travel, and adherence to non-discrimination policies.
