Qualifications

• Must be 21 years of age.
• Must have the physical capability of performing a daily pre-trip inspection.
• Must be physically able to wear a seat belt.
• Annual physical examination.
• Ohio Department of Education Form T-8.
• Must complete pre-service and in-service training for school van operation.
• Must hold a current driver’s license.
• Ability to cope with stressful situations related to students including those with disabilities.
• Formal/in-service training related to transportation of students.
• Satisfactory work history and driving record; background checks.
• Understanding pupil transportation in the educational program; comply with laws and policies.
• Pass a pre-employment drug screen.

Responsibilities

• Cleans the van and arranges repairs as needed.
• Completes mandated pre-trip before driving the van each day.
• Complies with Ohio laws, ODE and district policies on drug/alcohol testing.
• Obeys all Ohio and local traffic laws and district policies.
• Observes safety regulations for school buses; maintains schedule and route.
• Directly supervises students in the van and stays alert to behavior.
• Maintains discipline and enforces bus regulations as outlined in the handbook.
• Reports undisciplined students in writing to proper authorities.
• Picks up and discharges students only at authorized stops.
• Transports only authorized students.
• Completes route timing sheets and other reports; timelines submitted.
• Notifies authorities in case of mechanical failure or delay.
• Notifies authorities for hazardous road conditions.
• Reports all accidents within 24 hours; attends safety meetings.
• Keeps van fueled; reports spills to head mechanic.
• Uses proper grammar in reports and uses bus radio professionally.
• Reports traffic violations to supervisor; maintains professional conduct.
• Maintains mature behavior on duty and on school property.
• Carries license at all times on duty; follows cell phone rules around students.
• Idle time limited; engine shut off when parked for 3+ minutes.
• Shuts engine off when parked unless handicapped lift is used.
