School Support Associate - Blind Skills Specialist

Position Overview

The Blindness Skills Specialist (BSS), under the division of special education within the department of elementary and secondary education, will develop and coordinate programs to provide blindness skills specialists at each regional professional development center.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Serve as a resource for school districts regarding eligible students.
  2. Make programming and placement recommendations based on assessments and IEP information.
  3. Provide in-service training on blindness techniques to educators.
  4. Offer parents referrals and information on available services.
  5. Coordinate services from other entities serving eligible students and families.
  6. Assist local districts with special education services.
  7. Support the use of appropriate technology in education.
  8. Contribute to regional and statewide in-service training addressing the needs of eligible students.
  9. Report annually to the Blind Task Force.
  10. Prepare written reports with instructional strategies for students with vision impairments, including deafblindness.
  11. Collaborate with Outreach staff on professional development programs.
  12. Travel as required.
  13. Perform related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Educational requirements as per House Bill Chapter 162.1133 and related statutes.
  • Certification as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist or in Vision Impairments.
