Position Summary

This position reports to the Educational Coordinator and the Director of Adolescent Education. Responsible for conducting both group and individual counseling sessions for students, providing conflict resolution, anger management and behavior management strategies to students. The School Social Worker is also responsible for assessing a student’s emotional condition daily and providing a therapeutic assessment for any student in crisis. Documents and communicates pertinent information to educational staff and Clinical Treatment Team. This position maintains contact with families, outside physicians and other community agencies involved with day school adolescents. Establishes counseling goals and objectives for each student and participates in scheduled Planning and Placement Team meetings. Contributes to creating a caring and compassionate environment through ECHN’s Core Values of Teamwork, Communication, Respect and Caring.

EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION

  • This position requires a Masters degree in Social Work with CT State Department of Education Certification in Social Work (071).
  • Training and/or familiarity with Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), familiarity with abuse and neglect reporting mandates, duty-to-warn mandates and knowledge of community-based resources is preferred.
  • Age-specific knowledge of population served and competencies is required.

Experience

  • A minimum of two (2) years experience in Child/Adolescent Behavioral Health and/or as a School Social Worker is required.
  • Clinicians in Child and Adolescent Services must have minimum of one (1) year experience in family therapy with age group served.

COMPETENCIES

  • Computer competency with basic knowledge of Microsoft WORD and OUTLOOK is essential.
  • The duties of this position require strong clinical skills including a demonstrated strength in team orientation, time management, crisis intervention, customer relations and interpersonal interactions.
  • Strong written as well as verbal communication using the English language is needed.
  • Must be flexible in approach so that service-specific as well as overall system needs can be met.
  • Must be able to function effectively, and at times, independently in a work environment where multitasking is necessary.
  • Must have access to reliable transportation to travel between multiple work sites; and travel is required in order to perform essential duties.

  • Consistently demonstrates sound clinical practices as it relates to student’s individualized goals, as evidenced in Individualized Educational Plan, by feedback from MD and clinical staff and supervisor observation.
  • Consistently implements and modifies plan to meet student’s ongoing needs, considering support system, developmental factors and cognitive functions, as evidenced by review of student records, staff feedback and supervisor observation.
  • Consistently conducts clinical counseling groups and completes required documentation in a timely manner, as evidenced by review of student records and supervisor’s observations.
  • Consistently promotes a safe and therapeutic environment in accordance with established school policies, procedures and principles of Physical Management Training, as evidenced by students’ behavior, feedback from students, staff feedback and supervisor’s observations.
  • Consistently demonstrates a leadership role in resolving student conflict with staff and peers, as evidenced by staff feedback and supervisor observations.
  • Contributes to meeting the fluctuating staff needs in department by demonstrating flexibility in adjusting to changes in routine and building enthusiasm with subordinates to assist them in adapting to change, as evidenced by peer feedback and supervisor observation.
  • Demonstrates respect for chain of command and follows established protocols by reporting significant events to appropriate person in a timely manner and consistently seeks supervision from the appropriate individuals, as evidenced by supervisor’s observations.
  • Actively participates in supervision, identifying clinical skill areas needing improvement and openly accepting feedback from supervisor and peers.
  • Keeps abreast of current practices in field of expertise, as evidenced by attendance at conferences/seminars, presentations, self study and/or utilization of tuition reimbursement.
