MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Valid California Clear Pupil Personnel Services (PPS) Credential with a specialization in School Social Work
- Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university
- Experience providing case management, facilitating support groups, and delivering counseling services in a school setting
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively on multi-disciplinary teams
- Experience collaborating with community-based organizations and government agencies
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
DESIRABLE
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Valid license as a Clinical Social Worker issued by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences
- Master’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university
- Bilingual in English and Spanish

JOB DESCRIPTION
PRIMARY PURPOSE:
The primary role of the School Social Worker is to identify and assist students, families, and school systems in overcoming barriers that interfere with learning through the use of assessment, counseling, consultation, coordination of school and community resources, and program development. The School Social Worker utilizes knowledge of human behavior, social, cultural, and community influences to help create a positive learning climate. The School Social Worker functions as a mental health professional on multi-disciplinary teams and provides case management services.

Itinerant Supervisor: Director, Student Support Services

CORE DUTIES:
School Social Worker essential functions shall include but are not limited to:
Assessment and Evaluation
- Provides assessments to determine the social, emotional, behavioral needs of students for the purpose of providing effective intervention strategies for students and their families.
- Collects and records information to share with appropriate personnel as a component of case studies.
- Serves on multi-disciplinary team(s) to address needs of students with or without disabilities to assure implementation of appropriate services, programming and/or placement.
Consultation
- Contributes special knowledge of human behavior and relationships to staff.
- Provides consultation to administrators and teachers on broad areas of mental health.
- Consults with administrators, faculty, and staff on school and student needs.
- Consults with parents regarding ways they can help their child become more successful in school.
- Consults with students and families to provide a broad range of community resources.
Intervention and Support
- Provides crisis intervention services.
- Evaluates students to determine their need for school social work or other services.
- Employs appropriate social work methods in situations affecting the student's educational progress.
- Provides direct services to students and parents.
- Supports the implementation of the school’s RtI program.
- Supports and enhances a positive school climate.
- Provides classroom and student behavior supports to teachers.
Coordination And Liaison Responsibilities
- Serves as liaison between school, families, and community agencies.
- Effectively utilizes community resources to serve family and student needs.
- Serves as school liaison to DCFS, Family Court, and other government agencies.
- Provides input to assure that student's educational, social, emotional, and material needs are met in accordance with established laws, rules, and regulations.
Planning and Preparation
- Assists the school in planning programs that prevent, reduce or alleviate situations that interfere with the learning process of students.
- Provides input, as requested, regarding district-wide and departmental policy and planning decisions.
- Develops new evidence-based programs based on students’ needs.
Time Management
- Organizes time, resources, and services to meet workload demands.
- Maintains accurate, complete, and punctual records as required by law, district policy, and administrative directions.
Professional Responsibilities And Development
- Abides by NASW's Professional Code of Ethics.
- Participates in professional growth activities.
- Promotes public awareness regarding school social work services.
- Conducts or participates in periodic needs assessments.
- Develops, implements, and evaluates the school social work program.
- Supervises school social work interns.
- Plans and/or provides in-service training programs.
- Performs related professional responsibilities.
- Uses appropriate channels of communication.
- Understands and works within one's role in the district and contributes to the total efforts of school social work services.
- Adheres to established regulations, policies, rules, and laws.
- Carries out other duties mutually agreed upon by the school social worker and administrator.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, And Personal Characteristics
- Knowledge of and experience in the use of counseling and guidance techniques with secondary students.
- Ability to work effectively and cooperatively with colleagues, other District personnel, and community representatives and agencies.
- Knowledge of the growth and development of children and adolescents, learning theory, and mental health concepts.
- Knowledge of uses, interpretation, and limitations of standardized individual and group tests.
- Ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, and District personnel verbally and in writing.
- Ability to work effectively with students in an advisory capacity and with adults in a consultative role.
- Understanding of the relationship between the total education program and counseling/guidance services.
- Understanding of the physical, intellectual, social, and emotional growth patterns of students.
- Ability to work effectively with all racial, ethnic, linguistic, disability, and socioeconomic groups.
- Ability to compose and comprehend written communication.
- Ability to travel to other sites/locations.
- Mobility to traverse all areas of the worksite.
- Ability to use word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software.
