JOB SUMMARY

The School Social Worker assists students whose emotional/social problems interfere with their ability to obtain maximum benefit from the educational program. Acts as liaison between parents/guardians, school, and public and private agencies responsible for student care and services.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES (may include, but not limited to)
  1. 1. Provides social work evaluations and services to students suspected to have a disability or special education students through the referral or Multidisciplinary Evaluation Team (MET).
  2. 2. May provide pre-referral consultation to teachers and administrators regarding students with behavioral and/or adjustment problems.
  3. 3. Attends MET and Individualized Education Program Team (IEPT) meetings.
  4. 4. Develops annual goals and short-term instructional objectives for students on the caseload.
  5. 5. Provides consultation to parents/guardians regarding family and community adjustment.
  6. 6. Serves as liaison between the school and outside social agencies when appropriate.
  7. 7. Makes home visits for family consultation and evaluation.
  8. 8. Makes regular school visits according to established schedules.
  9. 9. Provides assistance to teachers and principals regarding students with adjustment problems.
  10. 10. Assists in the development of student behavior management plans, functional behavior assessments and manifestation determinations.
  11. 11. Collects data regarding behavioral intervention plans and services provided to students with disabilities.
  12. 12. Maintains appropriate confidential records on each student referred.
  13. 13. Consults, counsels and collaborates with parents, school personnel, students and appropriate community agencies regarding behavioral and educational concerns developed in a multi-tiered system of support.
  14. 14. Assists with student threat assessment process.
  15. 15. Maintain regular, reliable and punctual attendance.
OTHER DUTIES
  1. May travel to and from district sites, constituent school districts and student homes as assigned.
  2. Represents the district on various community services agencies and professional organizations as appropriate to the assigned area.
  3. Performs other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education

Masters Degree - Social Work required. Eligible for temporary or full approval as school social worker through the Michigan Department of Education. Must hold valid social work license (P.A. 61 of 2004) through the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA).

Experience

None required; successful school social work experience preferred.

  8. 8. Ability to work effectively as a team member.
  9. 9. Demonstrate mental/physical ability and stamina for meeting the essential duties of the position.

  11. 11. Ability to maintain a calm, poised and professional image at all times.
  12. 12. Demonstrate honesty, integrity, and professionalism at all times.
  13. 13. Ability to exercise good judgment and make decisions in accordance with board policies and administrative guidelines.
