Job summary

Hawaiʻi State Department of Education is seeking School Security Attendants I–III to patrol campuses and ensure safety during classes, lunch, and after-school activities. Prospective candidates must meet English reading/writing abilities, basic arithmetic, and substitution rules for experience.

All levels require guarding certification; applicants must be registered with the Hawaii Board of Private Detectives and Guards.

Qualifications

  • Ability to read, write and understand English and follow instructions.
  • General experience includes following procedures and interacting with others to provide a service or information.
  • Specialized experience involves protecting people and property in a government, school system, or related organization.

Responsibilities

  • Patrol school grounds during class, lunch, before and after school.
  • Observe and report unusual student behavior.
  • Encourage students to seek assistance or counseling.
  • Ensure safe movement of pedestrians and traffic; supervise JPO program.
  • Enforce school rules; prohibit smoking, gambling, fighting, vandalism.
  • Inspect facilities for safety hazards; patrol playgrounds, bathrooms, cafeteria.
  • Direct unauthorized persons off premises and report concerns.
  • Assist with supervision at assemblies, pep rallies, sports events, dances.
  • Instruct loitering students to proceed to destination.
  • Assist staff in handling disturbances.
  • Inform administrators of critical situations requiring police/fire assistance.
  • Activate alarms as necessary.

Job Summary

Filling various School Security Attendant positions; authorized level School Security Attendant III. Applications accepted down to School Security Attendant I.

Salary Range
  • School Security Attendant I (SR‑07): $2,784.88 per month
  • School Security Attendant II (SR‑09): $2,899.72 per month
  • School Security Attendant III (SR‑11): $3,137.22 per month
Responsibilities
  • Perform campus supervision by patrolling the school ground during class, lunch period, before and after school hours.
  • Observe and report on unusual student behavior.
  • Discuss problems with students and encourage them to seek assistance or counseling.
  • Ensure safe and orderly movement of pedestrians and vehicular traffic, supervise the JPO program.
  • Enforce school rules; prohibit student smoking, gambling, fighting, vandalism, etc.
  • Inspect and patrol playground, bathrooms, assembly areas, cafeteria and other facilities for safety hazards.
  • Direct unauthorized persons or drivers off the school premises and report concerns to administrators.
  • Assist with supervision and control at special student activities such as assemblies, pep rallies, athletic events, and dances.
  • Instruct loitering students to proceed to their destination.
  • Assist teaching staff and others in handling disturbances.
  • Inform school administrators of critical situations requiring police, fire or other outside assistance.
  • Activate alarm as necessary.
Minimum Qualifications

Experience Requirements: Applicants must possess the ability to read, write and understand oral and written English, follow instructions, and perform simple arithmetic.

  • Level I: 6 months general experience and 6 months specialized experience.
  • Level II: 6 months general experience and 1 year specialized experience.
  • Level III: 6 months general experience and 2 years specialized experience.

General Experience – work that involves following written procedures and interacting with coworkers, supervisors or members of the public to provide a service or information.

Specialized Experience – experience working with a government, military, private or non‑profit organization, or a school system that involved protecting people and property against hazards such as fire, theft, damage, accident or trespass, providing knowledge of basic protective systems.

Substitutions Allowed
  • A high school diploma may substitute six months of general experience.
  • One year or more in law enforcement, security, or an honorable discharge from military service may substitute for six months of general experience and one year of specialized experience.
  • An associate degree or higher at an accredited college or university may substitute for six months of general experience and one year of specialized experience.
Certification Required

All candidates must be registered as a Guard with the State of Hawaii Board of Private Detectives and Guards, in accordance with Act 208, Session Laws of Hawaii 2010. A copy of the registration card must be provided with the application.
