Job summary

Hawaiʻi State Department of Education seeks a School Security Attendant I to patrol campus grounds, monitor student behavior, and enforce rules for safe, orderly school operations.

Responsibilities include supervising events, assisting staff, and communicating critical safety concerns to administrators. Requires reading/writing English and 6 months general plus 1 year specialized experience or substitutions. Certification as a Guard is required.

Qualifications

  • Ability to read, write, and understand oral and written English.
  • General Experience: 6 months required.
  • Specialized Experience: 1 year of specialized experience, or equivalent through substitution.
  • A high school diploma may be substituted for six months of general experience.
  • Experience in law enforcement, security, or an honorable military discharge may substitute for six months of general and one year of specialized experience.
  • An associate degree or higher may substitute for six months general and one year specialized experience.

Responsibilities

  • Patrols school grounds during class, lunch, and before/after hours to supervise campus.
  • Observe and report unusual student behavior on campus.
  • Discuss problems with students and encourage seeking or accepting assistance and counseling.
  • Ensure safe and orderly movement of pedestrians and traffic around school grounds; may supervise JPO program.
  • Enforce school rules and prohibit smoking, gambling, fighting, vandalism, etc.
  • Inspect playgrounds, bathrooms, cafeterias, and other facilities for safety hazards.
  • Direct unauthorized persons off school premises and report concerns to administrators.
  • Assist administration and staff with supervision at assemblies, pep rallies, athletic events, and dances.
  • Instruct loitering students to move to destination; assist staff with disturbances.
  • Inform administrators of critical situations requiring police or fire assistance; may activate alarms.

Salary

School Security Attendant I, SR-07: $2,784.88 per month.

Responsibilities
  • Performs campus supervision by patrolling the school grounds during class, lunch, before and after school hours.
  • Observes and reports on unusual student behavior on campus.
  • Discusses problems with students and encourages them to seek or accept assistance and/or counseling.
  • Ensures the safe and orderly movement of pedestrians and vehicular traffic in and around the school grounds and may supervise and monitor the JPO program.
  • Enforces school rules and regulations by prohibiting student smoking, gambling, fighting, vandalism, etc.
  • Inspects and patrols playgrounds, bathrooms, assembly areas, cafeterias, and other facilities to identify safety and security hazards as appropriate.
  • Directs unauthorized persons and drivers off the school premises, observes, assesses, and reports to administrators any concerns and unusual non‑student behavior.
  • Assists school administration and staff with supervision and control at special student activities such as assemblies, pep rallies, athletic events, and dances.
  • Instructs loitering students to proceed to their destination.
  • Assists teaching staff and others in handling overt disturbances.
  • Informs school administrators and others of critical situations that may require police, fire, or other outside assistance.
  • May activate alarm as necessary.
Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must possess the ability to read, write, and understand oral and written English, follow oral and written instructions, and perform simple arithmetic.

General Experience: 6 months required.

Specialized Experience: 1 year of specialized experience, or equivalent through substitution.

  • A high school diploma may be substituted for six months of general experience.
  • Experience of one year or more in law enforcement, security, or an honorable discharge from military service may be substituted for six months of general experience and one year of specialized experience.
  • Completion of an associate degree or higher at an accredited college or university may be substituted for six months of general experience and one year of specialized experience.
Certification

All applicants must be registered as a Guard with the State of Hawaii Board of Private Detectives and Guards, in accordance with Act 208, Sessions Laws of Hawaii 2010.

Temporary Positions

Temporary positions may be extended year to year, dependent upon funding and departmental needs. Hiring for a temporary position may lead to permanent opportunities and employee benefits, except for certain rights associated with reduction‑in‑force.

Payday

New employees can expect their first paycheck within the first three pay periods of their start date. Payday is on the 5th and 20th (or previous business day) of every month.
