Job summary

The City of Roanoke is seeking Virginia DCJS certified Law Enforcement Officers to serve as School Resource Officers for the Roanoke City Sheriff’s Office. The SRO interacts with police staff, school faculty, school administration and staff, parents, and students to lead and educate students, promote safety, and promote positive police/community relationships.

The officer serves one school and acts as a role model and counselor on campus.

Qualifications

• Virginia DCJS certified law enforcement officers required.
• Experience in school environment or youth interactions preferred.

Responsibilities

• Foster educational programs to increase knowledge of and respect for the law.
• Attend extracurricular activities at District schools to promote positive relations.
• Understand school policies for disciplinary matters vs. criminal activity.
• Review enforcement techniques and provide in-service training on crisis management and school security.
• Provide safety planning and crisis preparedness guidance for schools.
• Serve as a liaison among students, staff, and the community to address risks.
