Job summary

Aspen Public Schools is seeking a mobile School Resource Officer (SRO) to support the safety and security of students, staff, and visitors across three campuses. The SRO reports to the SRO Manager and collaborates with campus administration to implement safety initiatives and emergency preparedness.

Responsibilities include maintaining a visible safety presence, responding to emergencies, supporting restorative practices, and participating in drills and safety trainings.

Qualifications

  • 1–2 years of experience in law enforcement, private security, or school safety.
  • Strong observational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Ability to respond calmly and appropriately during high-stress or emergency situations.
  • Flexibility to work at any of the district’s three campuses based on staffing needs.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.

  • Monitor hallways, parking lots, restrooms, building perimeters, and other key areas to deter misconduct or unauthorized activity.
  • Assist school administration in addressing student behavior concerns or safety-related incidents.
  • Enforce visitor check-in and access control protocols, ensuring only authorized individuals are on campus.
  • Serve as a first responder to fights, threats, unauthorized visitors, or medical emergencies.
  • Assist in lockdowns, evacuations, and other emergency procedures as directed.
  • De-escalate potentially volatile situations using appropriate, non-confrontational strategies.
  • Document incidents clearly and promptly in accordance with district policy.
  • Attend required safety and professional development training sessions.
  • Assist with after-school events, extracurricular activities, and special functions as scheduled.

Description

The School Resource Officer (SRO) supports the safety and security of students, staff, and visitors at all Aspen Public Schools campuses. SROs serve as visible, proactive safety personnel responsible for maintaining a secure school environment, deterring unsafe behaviors, and responding to incidents and emergencies in accordance with district policies.

This position is mobile and may be assigned to work at any of the district’s three campuses, depending on operational needs. The SRO reports to the SRO Manager and works closely with campus administration to support school-wide safety initiatives and emergency preparedness.

Requirements

Campus Safety & Supervision
  • Provide a consistent and visible safety presence during school hours, arrival and dismissal, and lunch/recess periods.
  • Monitor hallways, parking lots, restrooms, building perimeters, and other key areas to deter misconduct or unauthorized activity.
  • Assist school administration in addressing student behavior concerns or safety-related incidents.
  • Enforce visitor check-in and access control protocols, ensuring only authorized individuals are on campus.
Incident Response
  • Serve as a first responder to fights, threats, unauthorized visitors, or medical emergencies.
  • Assist in lockdowns, evacuations, and other emergency procedures as directed
  • De-escalate potentially volatile situations using appropriate, non-confrontational strategies.
  • Document incidents clearly and promptly in accordance with district policy.

  • Emergency Preparedness
  • Participate in school safety drills (e.g., fire, lockdown, evacuation) and support staff and students during those drills.
  • Maintain working knowledge of campus-specific emergency protocols and safety equipment.
  • Ensure radios and other communication tools are functioning and used correctly.
Community Engagement
  • Build positive relationships with students, staff, and families while maintaining clear professional boundaries.
  • Serve as a supportive, trusted adult presence and role model on campus.
  • Support restorative practices and student accountability when appropriate.
Other Duties
  • Attend required safety and professional development training sessions.
  • Assist with after-school events, extracurricular activities, and special functions as scheduled.
  • Respond to alarm calls or emergencies outside of normal hours as needed and directed by the SRO Manager.
  • Complete other security-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Minimum 1–2 years of experience in law enforcement, private security, or school safety.
  • Strong observational, interpersonal, and communication skills.

  • Flexibility to work at any of the district’s three campuses based on staffing needs.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.

Preferred:

  • Prior experience working in a school or youth-serving environment.
  • Understanding of trauma-informed practices and student behavioral supports.
Certificates Required:
  • Guard Card
  • SB1626 Certification
  • CPR and First Aid
  • Taser Certification
  • Pepper Spray Certification
  • Exposed Firearm Permit (required only after completion of probationary period and board approval)
Working Conditions
  • Frequent movement between indoor and outdoor settings across campus.
  • May be scheduled at any of Aspen Public Schools’ three campuses.
  • Physical demands include walking, standing, and occasionally lifting safety equipment.
  • May be required to work flexible hours, including early mornings, evenings, or weekends for special events.
  • On-call for emergency response duties as needed and assigned.
