Job Description

The Northbridge Public School District is seeking a school nurse. The School Nurse is tasked with maximizing the educational experience for every student by minimizing illness-related absences and promoting an environment of health and wellness. In conjunction with the Building Principal, the School Nurse shall develop annual job goals that will become part of the criteria used to evaluate the Nurse.

Understand current practices and trends related to school health and factors influencing the learning process

Communicate effectively, orally and in writing; ability to read, write, speak and understand English

Demonstrate good judgment, approachable and professional, solid problem solving skills, self-motivated, well organized

Establish and maintain effective and harmonious working relationships with students, their families, colleagues and supervisors.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing from an accredited college/university.
  • Valid MA license to practice as a Registered Nurse (RN) in Massachusetts.
  • Possession of MA Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) School Nurse license, all levels.
  • Valid certifications in CPR, First Aid and AED.
  • Experience as a registered nurse working with school-aged children.
Responsibilities and Duties (including, but not limited to)
  • Provide clinical support and consultation to district nurses
  • Oversee and collaborate with District school nurses and Director of Pupil Personnel Services regarding school health services policies and procedures and revise as needed
  • Ensure District-wide consistency in the management of school health services
  • Complete annual application as School Nurse Manager for any application that requires registration with the state for medical purposes (e.g. MA DPH Medication Registration, Epinephrine Training for school personnel, Narcan training, etc.)
  • Assist Director of Pupil Personnel Services or building principals with scheduling float nurse/substitute school nurse health office coverage for each building for sick leave and other coverage needs
  • Administrator responsibilities/maintenance for health office electronic medical record
  • Complete and submit the monthly and end-of-the-year Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH) School Health Services report
  • Attend Regional and State School Nurse Leader meetings
  • Obtain annual district standing orders in collaboration with School MD
  • Collaborate with NPS school physician, local Board of Health and MA DPH
  • Interview, orient and mentor school nurse substitutes and new school nurse staff, with approval of and communication with the Director of Student Services/building Principal as needed.
  • Serve as a health consultant to the District and school administration
  • Relay important information to school nurses and administration
  • Ensure that the District’s health policies and procedures adhere to federal, state, and current standards of the Nursing Practice Act and of the MDPH
  • Oversight of communication, implementation and training of health policies and procedures throughout the District
  • Coordinate and arrange for student nurses through the district in compliance with existing contracts, and communicate said arrangements in advance to school nurses
  • Coordinate school health services PLC and early release agendas—in collaboration with all school nurses
  • Collaborate with District school nurses and Director of Pupil Personnel Services to review and update all standard forms for the District health program and website
  • Oversee the coordination and scheduling of annual, mandated screenings as needed
  • When applicable, manage Affiliate School Health Grant through DPH
  • While the DPH grant is in effect, the Nurse Leader will be released from 50% of hands-on student care in order to oversee all of the above across the District.
