Job summary

North Adams Public Schools is seeking a District School Nurse Float to support health services across the district. The role aims to minimize student absence due to illness and maintain a climate of health and well-being within schools.

Job Description

Job Goal: To Provide the fullest possible educational opportunity for each student by minimizing absence due to illness and create a climate of health and well-being in the schools.

Supervision: Reports to the Building Principal and the Director of Student Support Services.

Description Performance Responsibilities:

  • Assists School Nurse Leader, school health committee and administrators in developing school health program.
  • Participates in work of health curriculum committees.
  • Conducts school programs of immunization, physical examinations and sight and hearing testing as directed by the School Nurse Leader.
  • Observe students on a regular basis to detect health needs.
  • Instructs teachers on screening students for health related deficits.
  • Maintains up-to-date cumulative health records on all students.
  • Collaborates with parents, school personnel, physicians, clinics and other state and federal agencies on student health matters as directed by the School Nurse Leader.
  • Assesses family history and home situations.
  • Assumes authority in the absence of a physician, for the care of a student or staff member who has suffered an injury or emergency illness.
  • Administers first aid in accordance with established first aid procedures.
  • Make recommendations to the School Nurse Leader on health needs of individual students including assessment and evaluation and the degree of significance of health problems on student educational progress
  • Implements District Protocol on exclusion and readmission of students in connection with infectious and contagious diseases. Provides programs for the prevention and control of disease. Screens all new students to ensure compliance with immunization laws and makes recommendations for exclusion of student for lack of compliance to school administration.
  • Participates in in-service training programs.
  • Assist school personnel in maintaining sanitary standards in the schools.
  • Provide health counseling and education with students and school personnel. Such activities include in-service programs, individual and group counseling, classroom presentations of current health issues and promotion of health prevention program activities.
  • Maintains certification in cardio-pulmonary resuscitation.
  • Provides direction and assistance to substitute school nurses
  • Performs technical nursing services as prescribed by a physician and necessary to maintain medically fragile children in the school setting.
  • Demonstrate a knowledge of and ability to administer medications appropriately in keeping with the school policy/protocol on administration of medication in the school.
  • Participates in team evaluations and conferences on all children with medical problems as well as collaborates to develop individualized health care plans.
  • Completes accident reports and maintains a log of health room activities.
  • Administers prescribed and OTC medication to students.
  • Any other related duties as may be assigned by Administration.

Special Knowledge/Abilities for Position: The position requires the applicant to be fluent in Microsoft Word. The applicant must have experience with computerized data management, as well as, strong interpersonal and organizational skills. Must be able to work well with numerous agencies and departments.

Requirements

Required: Current Massachusetts licensure as a Registered Nurse (R.N.). Current Massachusetts certification as a school nurse. B.S. in Nursing from an accredited nursing program. Current C.P.R. certification.

Preferred: Three years of prior work experience in school nursing or related field.

The position requires the applicant to be fluent in Microsoft Word. The applicant must possess basic computer skills, as well as, strong interpersonal and organizational skills. Will be trained in the use of SNAP electronic medical records. Will be expected to complete Massachusetts Department of Education School Nurse Certification Requirements.
Physical Requirements: The position requires a moderate amount of walking, standing, sitting and climbing stairs and step stool whenever necessary. Activities also include moderate physical exertion in body movement such as reaching, bending, twisting, grasping, pushing, and pulling of objects. The position requires lifting objects of 20 pounds on a frequent basis, and over 40 pounds occasionally. There is a frequent requirement of fine manipulation associated with the required use of a computer, typewriter, keyboard, calculator, and other business machines. The use of medical equipment is also required.
Environmental Conditions: The occupant is required to work indoors. The regular chemical solvents are toners, inks, and cleaning fluids. The occupant may come into contact with medical and/or bodily fluids.

Salary

Based on salary grid with consideration of prior experience and educational attainment.
