Job summary

Alabama State Department of Education is seeking a School Nurse to assist the Lead School Nurse with health services in our district.

The role includes IHCP administration, medication management, health screenings, and collaboration with teachers, administrators, and families. This is a nine-month year position with compensation aligned to the Alabama Board’s salary schedule.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • LPN or RN licensure through the Alabama Board of Nursing.
  • Ability and willingness to meet the needs of children and parents.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with school personnel and parents.
  • CPR/First Aid certification preferred or willingness to obtain.

Responsibilities

  • Notify the Lead School Nurse of medical questions or unusual occurrences.
  • Provide nursing care for students requiring special health procedures (IHCP).
  • Record health data according to IHCP requirements.
  • Contact Lead School Nurse and principal regarding suspected child abuse/neglect cases.
  • Attend IEP meetings as directed by the Lead School Nurse.
  • Administer medication in accordance with board policy.
  • Assist Lead School Nurse in IHCP development.
  • Provide first aid for students.
  • Respond to potential emergencies including glucagon and related meds as needed.
  • Assist with health screenings, employee training, and other duties as assigned.
  • Assess and manage communicable health problems in school (head lice, scabies, impetigo).
  • Assist in determining exclusion/readmission of students for infectious diseases.
  • Assist with classroom management and materials organization.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned by higher authority.

JOB GOAL


  • To assist the Lead School Nurse in activities related to health service programs


PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES


  • Notify the Lead School Nurse of medical questions or unusual occurrences

  • Provide nursing care for students requiring special health procedures (Implementation of Individual Health Care Plan - IHCP)

  • Record health data according to requirements of IHCP

  • Contact the Lead School Nurse and principal regarding suspected child abuse/neglect cases

  • Attend IEP meetings as directed by the Lead School Nurse

  • Administer medication in accordance with board policy

  • Provide assistance to the Lead School Nurse in the development of IHCP

  • Provide first aid for students

  • Responds to potential emergency situations, which may require the administration of Glucagon and other medications related to the student’s condition

  • Assist Lead School Nurse with health screenings, employee training, and other duties as assigned

  • Assess and manage communicable health problems in the school such as head lice, scabies, and impetigo

  • Assists school personnel in determining the exclusion and readmission of students in connection with infectious and contagious diseases

  • Assist with classroom management, such as organizing instructional and other materials

  • Performs such other tasks and assumes such other responsibilities as may from time to time be assigned by higher authority


TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT


  • Terms of employment shall be consistent with the law relating to employment by a school system in the State of Alabama. Nine-month year, with a salary scale established by the Board for this position.


SALARY


  • Salary in accordance with Board approved State Salary Schedule.


EVALUATION


  • The performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s Policy on Evaluation of Support Personnel.
