Job summary

The Hoover City Board of Education is seeking a qualified School Nurse–RN to support health services across assigned locations. The position requires compliance with Alabama Nurse Practice Act, district policies, and active school health procedures including medication administration and emergency care.

Candidates must hold an Alabama RN license with at least three years of nursing experience (pediatrics or school health preferred) and be prepared to obtain CPR/AED certification if needed.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates support for the school system and its vision, mission, goals, and priorities
  • Practices within the Alabama Nurse Practice Act, ANSA Standards, and NASN Standards of School Nursing Practice
  • Complies with Alabama Department of Health regulations and district policies
  • Performs school health screening procedures and reports findings as directed
  • Serves as health advocate for students
  • Provides nursing care for sick or injured students or staff according to district policy
  • Administers medications according to district procedures
  • Maintains complete and accurate health records for each student
  • Submits mandated reports to the district nurse
  • Provides health counseling and teaching on an individual basis
  • Coordinates administration and management of medications at school
  • Maintains immunization records and health office supplies
  • Keeps up-to-date on health trends and continuing nursing education requirements
  • Adheres to policies, procedures, and applicable laws
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned by supervisors

JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE: School Nurse – RN
REPORTS TO: Principal / District Nurse
JOB GOAL: To support, promote, and implement a comprehensive program ofhealth services for the assigned location(s)

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Possesses a current license (RN) to practice nursing in the State of Alabama
  • Three (3) years nursing experience, preferably in pediatrics, community health,or acute care
  • Prior experience working in a school health setting preferred
  • Excellent organizational, time-management, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to proficiently use current technology
  • Current certification in CPR/AED instruction or willingness to obtain
  • Ability to meet suitability criteria under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999and Act No. 2002-457
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as state, federal, and local law andthe Board may require
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • 1. Demonstrates support for the school system and its vision, mission, goals, andpriorities
  • 2. Practices within the defined limits of the Alabama Nurse Practice Act, theAmerican Nurses Association Standards of Clinical Nursing Practice, and theStandards of School Nursing Practice of the National Association of SchoolNurses
  • 3. Complies with the Alabama Department of Health regulations, District policy, andthe ALSDE guidelines
  • 4. Performs screening procedures as required by the Alabama Department ofHealth, Alabama Education Agency, and District policy and reports finding asdirected
  • 5. Serves as health advocate for the student
  • 6. Provides temporary and emergency care for sick and injured students oremployees according to District policy and ALSDE guidelines
  • 7. Follows notification protocol in cases of of accident or illness
  • 8. Serves as a health liaison between school, physician, parent/guardian, andcommunity
  • 9. Assesses student problems, implements the nursing process, and makesappropriate referrals, working with students, teachers, parents, family physicians,and other community health providers as needed
  • 10. Coordinates a system of administration and management of medicationsadministered at school
  • 11. Administers medication according to District policy and procedures
  • 12. Reviews, evaluates, and maintains immunizations records
  • 13. Maintains complete and accurate health records on each student
  • 14. Submits timely reports as requested by the District Nurse
  • 15. Provides nursing care for students requiring special health procedures (i.e.catheterization, tube feedings, etc.)
  • 16. Maintains adequate supplies in the health office
  • 17. Reports potential school health/safety hazards as directed
  • 18. Participates in IEP development, child abuse investigations, and other schoolcommittees as requested
  • 19. Promotes wellness and provides information to facilitate healthy life styles amongstudents and employees
  • 20. Provides health counseling and teaching on an individual basis
  • 21. Contributes to the health education program as a resource person in bothplanning and teaching capacities, working with the principal and teachers
  • 22. Maintains ongoing communication with the Principal and District Nurse regardinghealth problems and related matters
  • 23. Maintains certification in CPR/AED instructor
  • 24. Participates in staff development meetings and professional growth activities
  • 25. Completes mandated continuing nursing education requirements to maintain RNlicense; keeps well informed of the latest trends in health and education
  • 26. Adheres to local Board policies, administrative procedures, and other likedirectives, as well as state, federal, and local laws
  • 27. Performs other job-related duties as assigned by Supervisor(s)
