Job summary

Bertie County Schools is seeking a SCHOOL NURSE to manage the health program at the school level. This role requires completion of registered nurse training and certification by the American Nurses' Association or NASN. Responsibilities include developing health policies, ensuring compliance with health regulations, and providing care for students. Qualifications

Salary Scale: State Salary Scale at Master’s Level (with National Certification)
FLSA Status: Exempt
Reports to: Principal (Also takes direction from Director of Student Services)
Supplies: None
Terms of Employment: 10 months

Qualifications
  • Completion of training necessary for licensing as a registered nurse.
  • Experience in pediatrics and/or public health nursing preferred.
  • Must be certified by the American Nurses’ Association (ANA) or the National Association of School Nurses (NASN).
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Considerable knowledge of medical disorders and treatment.
  • Considerable knowledge of child growth and development.
  • Working knowledge of public health problems and procedures for treatment in coordination with other health and social service agencies.
  • Working knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and regulations affecting the delivery of school health services.
  • Some knowledge of the school organization and the community served.
  • Ability to identify abnormal growth and development and symptoms of disease.
  • Ability to coordinate and facilitate services between the school, local health agency, and other community resources.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Develop policies, procedures, and work standards for school health program.
  • Monitor compliance of school health program with federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and policies.
  • Initiate program changes as needed.
  • Manage program allotment efficiently.
  • Prepare health reports for supervisor, board of education, and health department.
  • Collaborate with other child-support agencies in designing and providing a school health program.
  • Negotiate professional and medical services essential to the school health program.
  • Provide first-aid care and medically‑prescribed services.
  • Maintain security of school health supplies.
  • Serve as a resource person on health issues.
  • Provide staff development on health‑related topics for school staff and volunteers.
  • Screen and conduct health appraisals for students and staff.
  • Provide follow‑up evaluations on students as required.
  • Recommend corrective action where problems are identified.
  • Conduct home visits when appropriate.
  • Correspond with parents on health needs of children.
  • Record immunizations, health findings, and other relevant health data.
Physical and Cognitive Requirements

Work in this classification is considered light physical work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects.
