Job summary

Suburban Cook County Online Application Consortium is seeking a dedicated School Nurse to join our Student Services team. The nurse will treat medical issues, conduct health assessments, and coordinate health programs while maintaining essential student records.

The role reports to the school principal and collaborates with teachers, counselors, and staff to ensure a safe and healthy school environment. A Master's degree and RN license are required.

Qualifications

• Master's degree in a related field required for consideration.
• Registered Nurse license and appropriate state certification required.
• School Nurse Endorsement preferred; driver’s license desirable.

Responsibilities

• Provide medical treatment to students and monitor health issues.
• Coordinate routine health assessments and screenings (vision, hearing, orthopedics).
• Maintain accurate clinical records and documentation as required.
• Promote health education and vaccination programs within the school.
• Respond to emergencies and provide first aid as needed.

JOB TITLE: School Nurse
REPORTS TO: School Principal

JOB TYPE: Full-Time (35 hours/week)

JOB FUNCTION

Treats students for medical issues, helps prevent physical issues and disease, and coordinates routine health assessments.

This position directly reports to the school principal and functionally reports to the other school administrators and district directors. This position coordinates with the other teachers, instructional coaches, school psychologists, and school social workers along with other support staff, students, guardians, and the community.

TERM

Shall work the 10-month school calendar as defined by the Board of Education and Collective Bargaining Agreement. May work up to the equivalent of 10 total additional days in May, June, or August which shall be paid at the per diem rate of pay and determined in collaboration with Administration.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Responsible for professional, medical treatment of students.
• Responsible for early detection of physical problems and health evaluations.
• Responsible for disease prevention.
• Assists in promoting programs on health-education and immunization.
• Maintains clinical records.
• Coordinates vision, hearing, and orthopedic screening and health assessments.
• Provides emergency aid to students and school staff.
• Assists teachers in instructing students in health and nutrition education.
• Builds and maintains positive rapport and communication with students and guardians.
• Monitors halls and study periods with other faculty and staff.
• Establishes and implements nurses office management structure and rules that ensure the physical and mental safety of all students; ensures safety and security standards for children, staff, and visitors of the school; supervises all students throughout school grounds and on educational trips as necessary.
• Maintains required paperwork for individual student files, attendance and incident reports, and other necessary records.
• Maintains knowledge of research, developments, and best practices in nursing.
• Recognizes and supports diversity and equity in support of school and district initiatives.
• Maintains an educational philosophy and school climate which encourages a cooperative and participant attitude on the part of all staff and students; celebrates the achievements and successes of students.
• Participates in faculty meetings, educational conferences, in-service opportunities, workshops and other training seminars as required.
• Attends work as scheduled and arrives in a timely manner unless a qualified absence has been approved as described in the collective bargaining agreement.
• Performs additional related duties within the scope of this position.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Master's degree in related subject area and registered nurse (RN) certificate are required. Appropriate state license or certification; School Nurse Endorsement; and previous nursing experience with school-aged children are highly preferred. Driver's license required for student transport is highly desirable.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer. Prolonged periods of standing, reaching, and bending. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at times.
