Job summary

Akron Children's Medical Assistant role provides clinical and administrative support under the direction of a Provider and/or licensed Nurse, onsite in the school health setting. The position interfaces with patients and families and supports examination preparation, vital signs, phlebotomy, specimen collection, and documentation.

Responsibilities include data collection for assessments, lab specimen handling, patient communication, routine office tasks, and maintaining safe exam environments

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent required.
• Completion of an MA certificate program (MA), EMT, or Paramedic program required; relevant experience may be considered in lieu of program.
• BLS certification required.
• Medical Assistant certification (CMA or R.M.A.) preferred.
• No minimum years of experience specified.
• Healthcare environment experience preferred.
• Experience with EPIC or similar EMR preferred.
• Knowledge of medical terminology required.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word) required.

Responsibilities

• Prepares patients for examination; takes and records vital signs; performs phlebotomy as needed; administers medications as directed by Providers.
• Collects data for assessment and discharge planning under the direction of the Licensed Nurse.
• Collects, processes, and submits laboratory specimens per policy and procedure.
• Communicates patient findings to the Provider and/or Licensed Nurse.
• Documents care accurately and timely in the school medical record.
• Performs department-specific duties such as POCT, hearing/vision screenings.
• Performs routine office tasks such as faxing, copying, and filing.
• Cleans, stocks, and prepares examination rooms.
• Builds positive relationships with patients/students, families, school personnel and colleagues.
• Completes all assignments during scheduled working hours.
• Follows safety policies to ensure a safe environment for patients and staff.
• Other duties as assigned.

• Actively interfaces with patients and families of Akron Children's Hospitals
• Prepares patients for examination; takes and records vital signs; performs phlebotomy as needed; administers medications as directed by the Providers according to policy and procedure
• Collects data that contributes to the assessment and evaluation of individualized care and needs of assigned patients, including discharge plans, under the direction of the Licensed Nurse
• Collects, processes, and submits laboratory specimens in accordance with policy and procedure
• Communicates patient findings and pertinent information to the Provider and/or Licensed Nurse utilizing appropriate communication/documentation processes
• Accurate and timely documentation of care within the school medical record
• Performs clinical duties that are department specific such as POCT, hearing and vision screenings, and any other procedures
• Perform routine task and general office duties such as faxing, copying, filing, etc. as needed
• Cleans, stocks, and prepares examination rooms
• Develops and maintains positive relationships with patients/students, families, school personnel and colleagues
• Completes all assignments during scheduled working hours
• Follows safety policies and procedures in the delivery of care to assure a safe environment for patients, families, and other staff members

Other Information

Technical Expertise

• Knowledge of and experience in medical terminology is required
• Experience working in healthcare environment is preferred
• Experience working in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word) or similar software is required
• Experience working in electronic medical record (i.e., EPIC) or similar software is preferred

Education And Experience

• Education: High School Diploma or equivalent is required
• Completion of an approved (valid) Medical Assistant Certificate Program (MA), EMT Program, or Paramedic Program is required. Those hired into School Health prior to March of 2023 without completion of one (1) of these programs but has relevant years of experience will be given credit for their experience in lieu of the program requirement(s).
• Certification: Basic Life Support (BLS) training from the American Heart Association is required.
• Credential/Certification: Medical Assistant certification preferred (CMA or R.M.A.)
• Years of relevant experience: no experience required
