Job summary

Chesterfield County Public Schools seeks a Library Assistant to support the library media specialist with instructional lessons, clerical tasks, locating and checking out materials, and assisting staff. The role involves handling materials, circulation, and helping students and teachers with library technology and databases.

The position includes coordinating with parent volunteers and student helpers, preparing reports, and maintaining an organized library environment.

Qualifications

• Some knowledge of library procedures and filing systems.
• Some knowledge of and interest in children’s literature.
• Some knowledge of and skill in using audiovisual equipment, office equipment and computers and/or the ability to learn use of equipment quickly with some training.
• Demonstrated ability to read, alphabetize, file, type and perform basic clerical tasks and to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimum supervision.
• Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, students, parents and the public.
• Demonstrated ability to follow oral and written instructions.

Responsibilities

• Assists in processing new and discarded library materials
• Manages circulation transactions
• Shelves materials
• Assists librarian in repairing books
• Assists students and teachers in locating materials, and in the use of library technology and databases
• Assists in preparation and implementation of special programs, inventory and library lessons
• Assists in maintaining an attractive and organized learning environment
• Prepares correspondence, reports, and other materials as requested
• Performs other duties as assigned
