  • Hang whiteboards, bulletin boards, shelving, artwork, and other classroom materials.
  • Assemble furniture and equipment; perform minor repairs and basic maintenance.

Position: Part‑Time hourly – 25 hours per week

Fiddlehead School of Arts & Sciences is a small, vibrant public charter school serving approximately 200 students in Pre‑K through 8th grade. Our school community values creativity, relationships, environmental stewardship, and maintaining a welcoming, safe, and beautiful learning environment for students and staff.

We are seeking a dependable, hands‑on School Custodian & Maintenance Assistant to help care for our school facilities and grounds.

Position Summary

The School Custodian & Maintenance Assistant is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, organized, and welcoming school environment. This position combines routine custodial responsibilities with light maintenance and facility support.

We are looking for someone who takes pride in their work, notices what needs to be done, can work independently, and is comfortable tackling a variety of practical projects.

Key Responsibilities
Custodial & Cleaning
  • Clean and maintain classrooms, hallways, offices, bathrooms, common areas, and other school spaces.
  • Vacuum, sweep, mop, dust, and sanitize as needed.
  • Empty trash and recycling.
  • Clean and restock bathrooms.
  • Help maintain a clean and orderly kitchen/cafeteria area.
  • Monitor and replenish custodial and cleaning supplies.
  • Respond to spills, messes, and other immediate cleaning needs when available.
  • Support additional cleaning needs during school breaks and special events.
Light Maintenance & Facility Support
  • Hang whiteboards, bulletin boards, shelving, artwork, and other classroom materials.
  • Assemble furniture and equipment.
  • Make minor repairs and adjustments to doors, cabinets, fixtures, and classroom furniture.
  • Perform basic painting, patching, and touch-up projects.
  • Replace light bulbs and perform other basic facility tasks, as appropriate.
  • Help with moving, setting up, and breaking down furniture and equipment.
  • Assist with seasonal maintenance and basic grounds upkeep.
  • Identify maintenance or safety concerns and communicate them to school leadership.
  • Coordinate with contracted maintenance person.
School Community
  • Help maintain a safe and welcoming environment for students, staff, and families.
  • Follow school health, safety, and emergency procedures.
  • Maintain appropriate confidentiality and professional boundaries when working around students.
  • Work cooperatively with teachers and staff while minimizing disruption to learning.
Qualifications
Required:

  • Experience working in a school, childcare, community, or other public setting.
  • Basic knowledge of building and facility safety.

Compensation & Schedule

Hours: Flexible (25 hours a week) - Suggested: Monday - Thursday 2 p.m. - 7 p.m.; Sundays - 5 hours.

Pay: Based on experience

Start Date: As soon as qualified candidate is found.

Maine State Law requires ALL school employees to be fingerprinted and pass a Criminal History Record Check (CHRC). A copy of your CHRC MUST be uploaded as part of your application to be considered.

Criminal History Record Check certification is required.
