Job summary

The City of Lancaster, PA is seeking a School Crossing Guard to direct and manage traffic at assigned school crossings and facilitate safe student crossings. You will coordinate with school staff and use a radio to communicate with other crossing guards.

Applicants should be able to stand for extended periods in various weather conditions, promote safety, and follow rules for pedestrians and drivers. Prior experience is helpful but not required.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or GED preferred.
• Ability to communicate clearly with students, parents, and staff.
• Valid state driver’s license preferred (PA).

Responsibilities

• Regulates, directs, and controls vehicular and pedestrian traffic at school crossings.
• Directs traffic at parades and City functions needing traffic posts.
• Communicates via radio for coordination.
• Monitors traffic to locate safe gaps for pedestrians.
• Directs or escorts pedestrians, stopping traffic as needed.
• Conveys crossing rules to students and adults.
• Reports unsafe behavior to school officials.
• Records license numbers of violators and reports infractions.
• Learns location and purpose of street signs in patrol areas.
