Job summary

City of West Melbourne in Melbourne, FL seeks a School Crossing Guard to help ensure the safe crossing of school-age children at designated locations. Under supervision, you will direct pedestrians and traffic and assist children as needed.

Qualifications include a high school diploma or equivalent, 18+ years old, valid Florida driver's license, and FDOT Crossing Guard certification (to be obtained). First Aid/CPR/AED preferred. Outdoor duties in varying weather conditions.

JOB SUMMARY

Under the direction and supervision of the Patrol Division Commander or designee, this position is responsible for the safe and orderly crossing of school-age children in accordance with established rules and procedures and at an assigned location.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

• Provides assistance to children crossing streets and highways to and from schools.
• Maintains order by directing children to proper crossing areas and encourages behavior conducive to safe travel.
• Provides other types of assistance to children as needed.
• Attends to situations and/or conditions that could be potentially hazardous to pedestrians and/or motorists, and reports these conditions to the appropriate agency.
• Performs other related job duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS AND KSA'S

Education and Experience:

High school diploma or equivalent; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Must be 18 years of age or older.

Special Qualifications:

• Valid Florida Driver's License with acceptable driving record.
• Certification as a Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) Certified Crossing Guard is required to be obtained.
• First Aid, CPR, and AED certifications are preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Knowledge of local geography.
• Skill in effective communication.
• Ability to work in inclement weather conditions such as rain and/or heat.
• Ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information. This includes receiving instructions, assignments, or directions from superiors.
• Ability to work independently and communicate effectively in oral form.
• Ability to learn and be certified in laws pertaining to pedestrian and traffic movement from the Florida Crossing Guard Guidelines.
• Ability to learn and be certified in basic traffic signal operation from the Florida Crossing Guard Guidelines.
• Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergencies, and to execute duties firmly, tactfully, and impartially.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with children, law enforcement officers, and the general public.
• Ability to maintain yearly School Crossing Guard certification as required by Florida Department of Transportation using the Florida Crossing Guard Guidelines.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

The work is light work, which requires exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force to move objects. Requires standing or sitting for sustained periods of time; walking or moving from one work site to another; manual dexterity to pick, pinch, type, or otherwise work primarily with fingers; mental acuity including the ability to make rational decisions through sound logic and deductive processes; hearing to receive detailed information and to make the discrimination in sound; and the ability to express ideas by means of the spoken word and have close visual acuity. Additionally, the following physical abilities may be required:

• Balancing: Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling while walking, standing or crouching on narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces. The amount of balancing exceeds that needed for ordinary locomotion and maintenance of body equilibrium.
• Repetitive Motion: Substantial movements (motions) of the wrist, hands, and/or fingers.

Work is typically performed outdoors at assigned locations, where the employee is exposed to dust, dirt, and occasional inclement weather.
