The City of Ypsilanti is seeking a School Crossing Guard! This responsible position requires an individual who can interact amicably with children and exercise good judgment to ensure the safe movement of children to and from school roadways or intersections. School Crossing Guards work approximately 2 to 4 hours a day, Monday through Friday, during the school year (September through June). Specific hours are set by the Police Administrative Services Manager and may vary based on demand.

DUTIES

• Watch for gaps in traffic and safely walk children across the roadway or intersections while holding a STOP sign in a manner visible to approaching traffic.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

• High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
• Knowledge of traffic signals and basic safety practices.
• Ability to stand for 1 to 2 hours, work in various weather conditions, follow instructions, and deal courteously with children, parents, and the public.
• Must complete annual training and pass extensive background checks, with restrictions on recent convictions.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Requires walking, standing, and using hands to operate objects, with specific vision abilities needed.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Outside in all weather conditions, with moderately loud noise levels due to traffic.
