Qualifications

• Must be 21 years of age or older.
• Must be able to walk and stand for a minimum of 1 ¼ hours in the morning and 1 ¼ hours in the afternoon.
• Must have a working cell phone and valid email address.
• Must have access to reliable transportation and possess a valid PA Driver’s License.
• Applicant must complete all Act 34 and Criminal History Record Clearances prior to application.

Responsibilities

• Assist elementary and intermediate children in crossing the street at designated intersections in a safe and orderly manner.
• Ensure children and pedestrians are waiting safely away from the roadway.
• Oversee safe conduct of children while waiting for, exiting and dispersing from the school bus.
• Maintain regular attendance and punctuality; stand in highly visible locations to control traffic for crossings.
• Monitor traffic flow, use hand signals to stop and direct traffic, and load/unload buses.

Job description

The Bethel Park Police Department is currently taking applications for School Crossing Guards for the 2026-2027 school year. This part-time position works under the direct supervision of the School Crossing Guard Sergeants, who report to the Administrative Lieutenant of the Police Department.Duties include but are not limited to:Assists elementary and intermediate children in crossing the street at designated intersections in a safe and orderly manneEnsure children and other pedestrians are waiting safely away from the roadwayThe safety of the children under their control is paramountOversee the safe conduct of children while waiting for, exiting and dispersing from the school busMaintain regular and consistent attendance and punctualityThe school crossing guard must position themselves in a highly visible and safe location and control traffic for the children’s safe crossing of streets and roadsCommunicate effectively with children, pedestrians, and motorists, providing safety instructions and directionsStand on the side of the street where the children approach if possibleMonitor traffic flow to identify potential hazards and ensure safe crossing conditionsUse hand signals to stop and direct traffic to allow children and pedestrians to safely cross streets and load/unload busesMay observe and report suspicious vehicles or person, report safety hazards to the policeThe Guard, while at their assigned post, must remain in a position where they are easily observed by pedestrians seeking to cross the street and where they are able to observe anyone approaching the crosswalkCrossing Guards may use their vehicle for shelter if necessary during extreme inclement weatherREQUIREMENTS:Must be 21 years of age or olderMust be able to walk and stand for a minimum of 1 ¼ hours in the morning and 1 ¼ hours in the afternoonMust have a working cell phone and valid email addressMust have access to reliable transportation and possess a valid PA Driver’s LicenseApplicant must complete all Act 34 and Criminal History Record Clearances as required prior to application (For more information contact 412-831-6800 x102)Complete a Bethel Park application online or in person at the Bethel Park Police DepartmentBethel Park residency not required but preferredAbility to work Monday – Friday, following the Bethel Park School District scheduleFlexibility to work a modified schedule, shift, or assignment locationSchedules will occasionally vary to accommodate delays, early dismissal and school holidaysThe Guard must remain on their post for the full shift to receive payment for a shift workedBENEFITS:Regular Guards $17.42/hour, Alternate Guards $11.81/hourUniforms, equipment, and training providedSick leave and bereavement pay
