Job summary

Jefferson County Joint SD 251 seeks a School Companion to support students with behavior or emotional needs. This part-time position works closely with staff, students, and the public to create a safe, supportive school environment.

Responsibilities include assisting students, tracking at-risk students, providing social skills and coping training, attending meetings, and helping with organization and class assignments. Strong communication and confidentiality are essential.

Qualifications

  • Must be emotionally mature and able to work with students, staff and the public.
  • Experience working with children and adolescents.
  • Ability to work with staff, students and the public in a school setting.
  • Able to perform assigned tasks and follow directions.

Responsibilities

  • Provides assistance to students with behavior and emotional issues.
  • Track students at risk.
  • Provide training to students in social skills, behavior control, social communication, interpersonal skills, coping skills.
  • Reports student concerns to appropriate personnel.
  • Perform observations and collect data related to student behavior and emotional issues.
  • Attends school meetings concerning assigned students.
  • Provides tutoring assistance.
  • Assists students in organizing materials and class assignments.
  • Listens and resolves student issues or refers to the Building Principal.
  • Provides prompts to assist student in managing behavior.
  • Furnishes guidelines and prompts to assist the student in appropriate social behavior.
  • Functions as a member of a team providing assistance to the student.
  • Maintains high standards of ethical behavior and confidentiality.
  • Has regular and predictable attendance.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

  1. High School Diploma
  2. Emotionally mature and stable.
  3. Ability to work with staff, students, and the public.
  4. Previous experience working with children and adolescents.
  5. Demonstrated aptitude for the work to be performed.
  6. Able to perform assigned tasks.
  7. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.


REPORTS TO: Director of Student Services or designee.

NATURE AND SCOPE OF THE JOB:

To work with and support student needs related to behavior or emotional issues.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Provides assistance to students with behavior and emotional issues.
  2. Track students at risk
  3. Provide training to students to meet student needs such as but not limited to: social skills, behavior control, social communication, interpersonal skills, coping skills.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

This is a part-time position.

This is an "at will" position in that the employer or employee may terminate employment at any time or for any reason consistent with applicable state or federal law. The "employment at will" policy cannot be changed verbally or in writing, unless the change is specifically authorized in writing and expressly approved by the Board of Trustees of District 251.


EVALUATION:

Performance of this position will be evaluated by the Building Administrator and/or Director of Student Services.
