Job summary

Durham School Services is seeking a Bus Assistant to support safe student transport. You will help students board and exit the bus, monitor behavior, and report safety concerns. The role emphasizes professional conduct, teamwork with drivers and school staff, and adherence to district policies.

Responsibilities include assisting with restraints, documenting incidents, and maintaining a clean vehicle. Training and safety meetings are required, with opportunities for growth within a supportive

Qualifications

• Must be 18 years old (19 for NY per state law).
• Must meet physical and medical requirements.
• Must pass safety trainings and meetings to remain qualified.
• Ability to handle restraints and assist wheelchairs safely.
• Ability to relate well with children and maintain pupil behavior.
• Strong communication and diplomacy with students, parents, and staff.
• Ability to lift and assist students when necessary.

Responsibilities

• Assist students entering and exiting the bus safely.
• Maintain safe conduct and report concerns to supervisor.
• Seat students securely using belts and restraints as needed.
• Model ethical behavior and promote good character.
• Monitor passengers to ensure safety regulations are followed.
• Exercise management through communication and discipline per policy.
• Document and report violations to appropriate authority.
• Assist in evacuations during emergencies.
• Ensure students take belongings before leaving the bus.
• Keep interior of vehicle clean and presentable.
• Complete required paperwork and submit on time.
• Display professional behavior with staff and community.
• Present neat, professional appearance and punctual attendance.
• Attend all training, safety, and in-service meetings.
• Other duties as assigned
