Fort Smith Public Schools Transportation in Fort Smith, Arkansas is seeking a full-time Mechanic to maintain and repair district buses and fleet vehicles.

The role reports to the Head Mechanic and Director of Transportation and requires a high school diploma or GED and solid mechanic knowledge. You will perform diagnostics, service engine/transmission/brake systems, and keep detailed maintenance records. CDL is preferred, safety and computer skills are essential.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or GED required.
• Mechanic knowledge required; CDL preferred.
• Ability to lift 50 pounds and push/pull 20 pounds regularly.
• Capable of performing physical labor in hot/cold outdoor environments and using basic computer/email skills.

Responsibilities

• Assist in final quality control inspections on repaired school buses and district fleet vehicles before returning them to service.
• Perform advanced diagnostic troubleshooting and repairs.
• Assist execute complex repairs on engine systems, transmissions, air brake systems, steering/suspension, and hydraulic equipment.
• Assist in the inspection and servicing specialized school bus equipment, including wheelchair lifts, passenger restraint systems, and emergency exit doors.
• Ensure all fleet vehicles comply with federal, state, and local safety standards and pass inspections.
• Maintain comprehensive digital and physical records for vehicle history and maintenance schedules.
