Purpose Statement

The job of the School Bus Driver is for the purpose of providing support within the student transportation services area by: * Transporting students over scheduled routes and/or to/from field/activity trips * Ensuring vehicle is in safe operating condition * Ensuring safety of students during transport, loading and unloading from buses * Reports to:* Supervisor of Transportation Operations or designee

Essential Functions

The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the classification. * Advises students and other passengers of appropriate behavior for the purpose of reinforcing established guidelines and maintaining passenger safety * Assesses incidents, complaints, accidents and/or potential emergency situations and responds (e.g. notifies emergency responders of road hazards, medical emergencies, accidents; administers first aid to students as needed, etc.) for the purpose of notifying appropriate authorities of situations and providing for students' health and safety * Assists students and other passengers in boarding and unboarding safely (e.g. provides assistance to passengers as needed; utilizes safety features of school bus, operates wheelchair lifts, tie-downs, hydraulic lifts, etc.) for the purpose of providing safe loading, transporting, and unloading from buses and securing students, wheelchairs, and adaptive/assistive devices during normal transport and emergency situations * Attends unit meetings, in-service training, workshops, etc. for the purpose of gathering information required to perform job functions * Cleans interior and exterior of assigned vehicles for the purpose of ensuring safety, appearance, and sanitation of vehicles * Conducts annual emergency evacuation drills for the purpose of ensuring efficiency of procedures and complying with mandated requirements * Drives school buses for the purpose of transporting passengers over scheduled routes to and from school, field trips, or activity trips in a safe and timely manner * Fuels vehicles for the purpose of maintaining the vehicles in operating condition * Informs other school personnel and parents of events, policies and/or practices (e.g. scheduled stops, established routes, route conditions, etc.) for the purpose of providing information and/or clarification of procedures * Monitors students, directs other passengers during transit, and takes appropriate action as needed for the purpose of ensuring the safe transportation of all passengers * Performs pre-trip and post-trip inspections and maintains inspections, maintenance and activities documentation (e.g. tire pressure, interior and exterior condition, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the safe operating condition of the vehicle and complying with mandated guidelines * Prepares and reports observations regarding incidents and corrective action by driver/staff (e.g. student conduct, discipline, accidents, inappropriate social behavior, etc.) for the purpose of communicating information to appropriate personnel for action or resolution * Responds to inquiries from students, parents, and/or staff for the purpose of providing the necessary information regarding transportation services

Physical Standards

Work Environment

  • Work primarily performed on a school bus and outdoors
  • Continuous driving required; possible evening and/or variable hours
  • Exposure to fumes, dust, odors, oil/grease, seasonal heat/cold, and adverse weather
  • Frequent proximity to moving mechanical parts
  • Subject to constant interruption, severe time constraints, and direct contact with public, students, and employees
  • Interactions may result in challenging situations
  • Often working without direct supervision
  • Responsible for safety and wellbeing of passengers
  • Noise level is loud; voice must often be raised to be heard

Physical Demands

  • Sitting for extended periods while operating buses
  • Hearing and speaking to exchange information
  • Reaching, pulling, and pushing to open bus doors
  • Bending at the waist, kneeling, or crouching to inspect and wash buses
  • Climbing ladders or steps
  • Reaching overhead, above the shoulders, or horizontally
  • Seeing to monitor passengers and operate a vehicle
  • Lifting moderately heavy children or objects (between 60–100 lbs)

Education / Training / Experience

  • Required: Job-related experience in driving school buses
  • Preferred: Experience managing school-aged children
  • Education: Completion of high school or General Education Diploma (GED)
  • Experience Equivalent: Any combination equivalent to one (1) year experience in the operation of a motor vehicle
