Job description

DEFINITION: Under general supervision, to operate a school bus over designated urban, suburban, and rural roads in transporting students safely and efficiently to and from school, field trips, and special events; and to do other related work as directed.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS

Positions in this class operate school buses of varying sizes and types to transport students to and from school. Incumbents, as assigned, transport students and the adults who accompany them on educational trips and for extracurricular activities.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
  1. Drive a bus over designated rural, urban, and suburban routes in accordance with time schedules, picking up and/or discharging students, stopping traffic as necessary to escort students safely across streets.
  2. Assist special needs students on and off bus and with restraints; operate wheelchair lifts.
  3. Maintain good order among students on the buses, following policies regarding citations and discipline.
  4. Discuss student discipline issues with school administrators and parents.
  5. Communicate with parents of special education students regarding needs and schedules.
  6. Transport students, faculty, and parents on field trips, meeting scheduled departure and arrival times.
  7. Use maps to determine best routes to special events.
  8. Operate a two-way radio and complete reports on mileage, citations, accidents, and passenger counts.
  9. Perform daily safety inspections, fuel vehicles, and maintain buses in clean condition.
Requirements / Qualifications
LICENSE REQUIRED
  • Possession of a valid California Driver's License (Class B - Commercial License).
  • Successful completion of Driving and First Aid Examinations for School Bus Drivers by the California Highway Patrol.
  • Certificate of physical/medical examination.
  • Valid California School Bus Driver’s Certificate.
QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of street conditions, California traffic and education codes, vehicle operation, basic record keeping, student discipline, and safety procedures.

Ability to read maps, monitor student behavior, enforce rules, maintain vehicle cleanliness, conduct evacuation training, and operate a vehicle safely following legal practices.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Any combination of training, education, and experience demonstrating the ability to perform duties. Entry-level training and experience in bus driving that meet appropriate codes are typical qualifications.

COMMENTS AND OTHER INFORMATION

This position guarantees 6 hours per day / 30 hours per week, with a sign-on bonus and full health benefits.

Hourly wage: $22.80 - $29.11, plus $18,250 for health insurance, dental, and vision coverage at no cost for the employee.
